Steger, Illinois is a small town in rural Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Steger is located on the banks of the St. Joseph River and has a small shopping mall, a post office, two churches and two museums. The first settlers in Steger were farmers who arrived in 1814 from Dakota Territory. They built a log cabin on the bank of the river and named it "Steger." A post office was established in 1831, and by 1840 there were ten residents living in Steger. In 1854, SteGER became an incorporated village under the name of "Granite City". In 1865 it changed its name to "Streator" after General George Hurlburt's brigade which fought in the American Civil War at Granite City Ridge near Cairo, Illinois. In 1870 it became part of Kane County when that county was created from parts of Cook and Will counties. A school for black children opened in SteGER in 1923; it closed 1973 but was reopened as an elementary school known as Grosse Pointe Park Elementary School until 1992 when it merged with nearby Loyola Township to form Streator-Loyola Township School District No.. 434 which still operates today as one high school campus serving grades 7-12 with Dual enrollment programs for Grades 3-8 (and soon 5th through 8th grade) located adjacent to Grosse Pointe Park Elementary School buildings across I-75 from Oak Forest Middle/High Schools also serve students here including: Edison Science Academy (grades 9-10), Holy Rosary Catholic High School (grades 11-12), Archbishop Molloy Catholic High School (grades 13-16) & Our Lady Of Fatima Evangelical/Catholic Secondary School (grades 7-10).

Steger is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,759 at the 2010 census and 2,090 at the 2012 census. The name is derived from German settlers who arrived there in 1857. The first settler in Steger was John Steger, who came to what is now Steger Township on February 24, 1857. He had been living in Fayette County since he had come overland from Germany two years earlier. On May 10 of that year, John's son Jacob moved into the township with his family and others from Clear Creek Township (now part of Galesburg), also in McHenry County. The first post office in SteGER was established on July 3, 1857; it was called "Fayetteville". It served as the village seat until 1875 when it became SteGER proper. In 1865 a depot for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway was built near by and renamed "Steger Depot". The railroad connected SteGER with Carbondale and other parts of Illinois. The population of SteGER increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to immigration by Germans and Irish Americans seeking work on agriculture or manufacturing contracts. By 1900 there were more than 1,500 people living in town. In 1912 stegers incorporation as a village followed suit with a population of 751 residents; however this number increased only marginally until 1940 when its total reached 2,090 residents – an increase of almost 100%. In 1916 local school trustees voted to close all public schools effective October 15 because enrollment had declined so markedly that no new buildings could be constructioned within budget without sacrificing instructional quality or student convenience. This decision led to protracted high school tuition protests which finally subsided after state legislators allocated $10,-000 towards constructing new high schools outside the town limits; these were opened in 1922-1924 (the last building being dedicated on December 12th 1924). At present day there are only six elementary students attending Grades K-4 enrolled at Cooks Valley Middle School located adjacent to his High School Campus while Stegers Intermediate School has been closed since 2009 due to declining enrollments across grades but still manages property along side Cooks Valley Middle School which has 800+ Students currently enrolled making it one of largest middle schools west of Interstate 70! SteGER Main Street features several restaurants including Pizzeria Grease Monkey’s Pizza ($) and Joes Pizza ($) as well as gasoline pumps located at each corner near busy intersections such as State Road 47/Highway 31A just east of town center while small grocery stores dotting every block offer basic items like milk, bread products etc.; many families rely though community gardens which produce vegetables year-round despite occasional hard freezes/torrential rainstorms!

In 1847, the Stegers erected the first school in Steger. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s, and by 1900 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1910, Steger had become an important local agricultural center, and its economy was based on agriculture and livestock production. In the 1920s, steers were replaced by horses as the main source of revenue for the townspeople. However, during World War IISteger became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location at the crossroads of two major military routes.
