Steger is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Steger was first established in 1836 when two men named John and Peter Steger bought 640 acres (250 km²) of land east of present-day Carbondale. The village plat was filed on December 12, 1837 and it was formally incorporated as a town on March 26, 1840. The first post office at Steger was established on January 3, 1840. On November 30, 1847 the village had 2 buildings and 25 residents. By 1860 the population had grown to 350 with 16 buildings and 75 residents. On November 6, 1861 the Village of Steger adopted a charter that granted voting rights to women over 21 years old and provided for an election board to manage public services including education, firefighting, streetlights and water supply. In 1865 the village had 9 buildings with 45 residents; by 1870 it had 32 buildings with 100 residents; by 1880 it had 56 buildings with 150 residents; by 1890 it had 78 buildings with 200 residents In 1893 Steger's hospital opened which became one of the largest hospitals in Illinois. The new hospital served patients from Carbondale through Elgin until 1976 when Cook County purchased it from them for $10 million . In 2000 Lake Michigan Radio Corporation built their headquarters within its boundaries making Steger one of only two villages in Kane County still without any commercial or professional development outside its limits

The population reached 3,000 in 1870, and it grew to 10,000 by 1890. SteGER is now a bedroom community with an estimated population of 20,000.
