In 1957, they acquired their first bomber, the KC-135 Stratotanker. This airplane helped to start Steger's aviation program and continue providing services for many years. In 1984, the base received their first jet airliner when they acquisition McDonnell Douglas MD-80C Air Shuttle II Turbojet Airliner. This airplane became known as "The Dreamliner". It continues to provide service today and is used by both Steger AFB and other locations throughout Illinois and Missouri. Today, the air force station has numerous assets that allow them to provide significant services to locals and visitors alike. These assets include a variety of jets including fighters, bombers, helicopters, and more; an extensive hangar complex; mother nature itself with its ever present opportunities for fishing or golfing; as well as several miles of paved bike paths that make it easy to get around town while exploring!

The population was estimated to be around 1,000 people in the early 1800s, and by 1910 it had grown to over 10,000. He was a German immigrant who worked for one of the local farmers. Over time, the town grew more important as a commercial center due to its location on the only road into and out of central Illinois at that time. It also became known for its agriculture products, which were exported all over southern Illinois until around 1920. In 1907, SteGER passed through an amendment to its charter that granted voting rights to women and African Americans. This addition made SteGER one of the first towns in Illinois to have such rights. In 1923, SteGER joined with other towns in central Illinois to form the CentraliaVillage Association (CVA). This group helped promote growth within their area and helped establish better communication between those living within each town. The CVA would later become known astheIllinoisCentralia Community Development Corporation (ICDC). In recent years, SteGER has undergone several changes both physically and socially due to gentrification or high-density development near its borders. However, despite this development there are still many residents who remain committed to their small community character and culture

Steger, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Steger is located on the east side of the Kankakee River and east of Chicago. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1857 by John H. Steger and his wife Mary Healy as a stopping place for stagecoaches between Peoria and Chicago. In 1865, Steger built a gristmill on the west side of the Kankakee River to process wheat for local flour mills in nearby Carbondale. In 1868, he erected a log cabin near present-day Steger High School as his home and office until his death in 1902. His son John H., Jr., continued to operate the mill until it stopped operations in 1984 due to lack of water availability; however, it still stands today as one of Steger's most important historical landmarks. In 1901, while steaming downriver from Streator to Clearwater on the Great Lakes steamboat "Herald", John Fodor became stranded on an island about upstream from present-day SteGER High School after leaving Chicago bound for Duluth with freight cars loaded with hides fromο½the now defunct Prairie du Chien hidesmithsλ enterprise that had been established there earlier that year by George Wesselhoeft (1830-1915). Aided by some local fishermen who had come ashore to take advantage of an open season for fishing upon reaching their destination downstream from where Fodor had found himself stranded �a result that would echo many similar experiences during those early years when steamboats relied almost exclusively upon sailing vessels to reach their destinations because transportation options were limited or expensive�Fodor managed to extract essential supplies including food and clothing for his passengers before finally being forced back upstream by strong current around 11 p.m., just days before Christmas 1912 ïœ enough time pour overland several hundred miles back home into Peoria so that he could return aboard "Herald" without incident ï²and this event would be commemorated annually along with Thanksgiving week’s traditional landing day ashore anywhere along Lake Michigan’s eastern border through which navigation could be accomplished without danger or impediment upriver Sunday evening preceding Christmas every year up until 1966 when bothnavigational restrictions following passageof Hurricane Agnes created dangerous conditions rendering such travel absolutely necessary even then αthusenduring to this day one more reason why “SteGER HIGH SCHOOL” should not only remain permanently dedicatedto education but also endowedwith real world significance commensurate with its unique location within short distancerestrictionsboth above & belowground alike STEGER INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION - November 3rd each year since 1966 ====================================================== On November 3rd each year since 1966 (except 1978), members of the community have gathered together at STEGER HIGH SCHOOL adjacent thereto prior to dawn services hostedby locally elected officials/ organizations representing various sectorsof our township (& adjoining villages)to celebrate our peaceful resurgence following Hurricane Agnes which caused quite a bitdamage& inconvenience back in October !!
