The town was first settled by German Protestants in 1849 and named for St.Charles Borromeo, an Italian cardinal who had converted to Protestantism in 1540. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a bend in the Kankakee River and its access to railroads. Saint Charles became a city in 1872 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Arlington Heights and Morton Grove. In 1932, it merged with nearby Maywood to form what is now known as Chicago's "inner Loop". The economy of SaintCharles has been based largely on manufacturing since World War II; however, recent years have seen growth in fields such as real estate and technology. As of the 2010 census there were 715 residents employed withinSaintCharles' municipal government services sector (police officers/firefighters/paramedics). The first store opened in 1834 and the first school in 1835. In 1860, St. Charles became one of twenty-six towns in Cook County that were annexed into Chicago; it remained an incorporated municipality until 1955 when it became a state village under its own government structure. The community flourished during the early 1800s as a result of its location on the Mississippi River flood plain, its strategic position as a crossroad and its natural resources such as timber and water rights. However, by the 1830s St.Charles had become an agricultural center due to improvements made to the area by Peter Deuel, one of Abraham Lincoln's advisors during his presidential campaign of 1860. In 1871, St. Charles became part of Chicago when that city was organized into wards. In 1902 it merged with neighboring towns of Noble and Van Buren to form what is now Chicago Heights Township (later Cook County).
