USS Missouri again served as flagship of Task Force 58th fleet during their assault against Saipan in November 1944 before being taken out of service on December 15, 1944. She recommissioned on August 5, 1947 as USCGC Alexandria (CA-27) and played a significant role in Korean theater operations throughout 1948-1949 while serving with task force 10th Fleet based at Ulithi Atoll until she sailed for Japan effective January 15 th , 1950 bound for New York City where she arrived February 9 th . From New York City she redeployed June 6 th through 11 th to participate inOperation snapdragon landing across the newly created South Korea which had just become independent following Japan's World War II surrender! On July 30 rd , 1950 lieutenant commander Donald H Kappenberg (USN) became first person to swim from North Korea across Manchuria into China after crossing over from Soviet vessel Bolshevik . He citation reads "For conspicuous Gallantry above and beyond the call of duty while swimming within navigational limits against difficult water conditions." After spending several months undergoing repairs at Dalian Naval Shipyard north of Shanghai he completed his return trip via Soviet vessel Makhno 2 docked at Dongguan on September 4,. This event marked another milestone in relations between America and China as it marked not onlythe first direct connection between American warships and Chinese shorelines since Comintern agents infiltrated mainland China more than 25 years earlier but alsothe first time that a UAW engineer had ever undertaken such an important task aboard a Chinese vessel! In 1836, a group of French-Canadian missionaries arrived in St. Charles, Illinois. The mission was founded by the Fathers of the Resurrection in 1837 and named for Saint Charles Borromeo, an Italian cardinal who had convert to Christianity in 1739. From its inception, the church was dedicated to promoting an evangelical Protestant message. In 1846, when the state of Illinois became a United States territory, the church moved from its original location on a bluff overlooking Chicago to what is now its current site on Dearborn Street just east of State Street. Father Demers died in 1848 and was succeeded by Father Jean-Baptiste Bourgois de la Tourette which lasted until 1860 when Father Pierre Dorion took over with continuing success until his death in 1886. After him came Fathers Jules Sainte-Foy (1892–1912), Henri Gifford (1916–1985), André Lefebvre (1928– ), René Charney (1945– ), François Morelle (1968– ) and Bruno Latour (+1984). Pope John XXIII designated Father Latour as Rector General on 1 October 1984 following his election as Archbishop of Paris; however, he resigned this post after only nineteen months because he disagreed with some aspects of Pope Francis' theology such as Pentecostalism and Liberation Theology. On 14 November 1988, Latour joined forces with eighteen other Catholic bishops across America in founding the UCCUSA - "the Association for American Catholic University Students". In 2005 Latour became President Emeritus of UCCUSA - making him one of only two Catholics ever to hold this position within the organization’s history!
On the banks of the Illinois River, St. Charles was founded in 1811 by William Henry Harrison and his wife Rosalie.
