In 1912, Rufus Dillard founded Dillard's Food & Drug Store and soon became known for its excellent artisan coffee products. In 1967, Dillard's merged with Wards Coffee Company to become Wards-Dillard Corporation which continued to produce high-quality coffee until 2001 when it was sold to Peet's Coffee Company. During this time, also, Saint Charles became an important center for educational reform as several prominent Catholics began to promote learning as a way to better serve society. In 1865, Saint Charles voters passed a resolution authorizing creation of a Roman Catholic high school which would become Moody University. The school opened its doors in 1870 and soon became one of the leading colleges in America; it has continued this tradition ever since.

The area that is now St. Charles was part of the then-Indian Territory and became a United States territory on January 15, 1803. On October 1, 1809, the city of Chicago was founded as a result of an act of Congress.
