The St. Charles, Illinois Army National Guard was organized on December 8, 1907. The first unit to be raised was the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Regular Army. On July 15, 1912, the 25th Infantry Regiment of the Regular Army became a part of the St. Charles militia and was redesignated as the 26th Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1912. The regiment served in World War I and World War II before being disbanded in 1954.
Pope Pius IX declared in 1854 that St. Charles, Illinois was to be the new center of the Catholic Church in America. The small town quickly became a thriving ecclesiastical center and has since been known for its rich cultural heritage. Today, St. Charles is a popular tourist destination with stunning architecture and antiquatedusrtiques. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1812 as a settlement on the west bank of the Chicago River. The first bishop of Chicago, James Cardinal McGuinness, arrived in St.Charles in 1814 to found what would become the first large Catholic church in America. St. Charles quickly grew into one of the most important ecclesiastical communities in early Illinois; it served as an administrative center for many rural parishes and also hosted numerous religious meetings and celebrations throughout the years. In addition to its role as an important religious community, St. Charles also played an important role during the American Revolution; several key figures from within the town helped organized and lead local resistance against British forces during this time period. Despite these positive aspects of its history, however, some controversy exists about why St.Charles emerged as such an important ecclesiastical center during this time period; some suggest that it may have been due to its location on both banks of the Chicago River (which made transportation easy) and because it possessed high-quality clergy who could provide essential services to nearby villages and towns - something which other larger churches lacked at this point in their development). Additionally, there have been suggestions that certain elements withinStCatherine'ssupportive community might have contributed more than otherstothetown's success over time -namelyits close proximity to major city incomesand resources (aided by ample public transportation), its well-designed streetscape, AND ITS LIMITED POPULATION (due largely to immigration bans enacted throughout Europe at around this time). Here are a few examples: In 1903, the United States Army issued its first enlistment card. It featured a soldier standing at attention with his rifle in hand. The card was meant as an homage to U.S. Cavalry troopers who had fought in the Mexican-American War and were now serving in World War I. The first combatant badge was created in 1916 by combining an American Flag with a Soldiers' Cross from World War I. The badge was worn on the shoulder or as part of a unit patch. In 1947, the U.S. Army began issuing service medals and badges for enlisted soldiers and officers (including those serving in Korea). These medals and badges could be awarded for various achievements such as bravery, heroism, or achievement during combat duty.
The city of St. Charles, Illinois is located in the heart of the state of Illinois, and as such has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first settler in what is now St. Charles was Nicholas French, who arrived in 1778 and built a log cabin on a small Indian village site known today as Frenchman's Prairie. French built his cabin on land that later became part of the town of St.Charles. In 1815, France sold his holdings in St.Charles to David Johnston, an American fur trader who had moved from Montreal with his family several years earlier. Johnston renamed the town after himself, Saint-Charles (meaning "holy one"). In 1825, Johnnie Lee purchased Johnston's interest in Saint-Charles and continued to run it as a separate settlement until 1869 when he merged it into the city of Chicago. St. Charles experienced some significant growth during its time within Chicago; for example, by 1850 it had reached peak population size with over 100 residents! Additionally, many leading citizens fromSaint-Charles relocated toChicago during this time including:- Drury Egan (a doctor and politician), Edwin Drake (a banker and congressman), Cornelius Vanderbilt (the founder of Commodore Oil Company), Samuel Morse (the inventor of Morse Code), James Kappeler (a judge and politician) - all while still living in their original homes or businesses throughout the city limits! During World War II, much activity took place at Cook Air Force Base which was located just east of downtown St. Charles; this included manufacturing plants for General Dynamics' P-51 Mustangs and Northrop Aircraft's B-24 Liberators among others! Some notable people associated with wartime activity at Cook AFB include:- General Dwight D Eisenhower ( Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Forces) - who spent most training here before being sent overseas ; Admiral Chester Nimitz (Chief US Pacific Fleet commander) .......and more!
In 1814, a group of pioneers arrived in what is now St. Charles, Illinois. They were part of the Illinois Company and were looking for a new land to settle. The group was led by John Stephenson and James Kile. The town was founded on the site of present day St. Charles, IL on November 1, 1814 by these pioneers.
