The National Guard of Springfield, Ill., is one of the most diverse and proud organizations in the United States. It was founded on November 15, 1861, when a group of patriotic citizens gathered to form a militia to protect Springfield from invasion. The National Guard has fought in every conflict since then, including World War II and the Korean War. Today, the National Guard features over 150,000 men and women who serve our country through Regular Army units (the 101st Airborne Division), reserves (the 6th Infantry Regiment), and the Missouri State Militia Forces. For example, during the 1849-1853 Mexican-American War, Springfieldians organized a volunteer regiment that served under General Zachary Taylor during his unsuccessful attempt to push Mexico out of Texas. After Illinois became a state in 1868, Citizen George Hinkle organized an infantry battalion known as "The Blues" which helped suppress riots between white settlers and Black slaves near Carbondale in 1871. Another notable event happened during World War I when Springfieldians joined forces with other hometowns across Illinois to help form what was known as "The Big Three." This effort saw participation by many different units throughout Illinois; some are still remembered today such as The Chicago Fire Brigade or The First UMC unit located at Soldier Field. During World War II efforts were made by both civilians and soldiers in Springfield to become part of Allied military forces that would fight against Nazi Germany along with other major locations across America including New York City; Los Angeles; Boston; Philadelphia; San Francisco; Jacksonville Beach Fla.; Omaha NE; Stuttgart Germany; Perth Amboy NJ; Madison WI...In particular three soldiers from Springfield were awarded Distinguished Service Crosses--1st Lt Charles Averill Kapp (USAAF); Cpl Russell Wagoner(Army Air Corps); Sgt Leroy Bowen(Navy Seals)

Springfield is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 95,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first permanent settler in Springfield was Nicholas Biddle who arrived on February 13, 1814 and claimed land along the Sangamon River. He erected a small log cabin near what is now State Street and Third Avenue. A few years later he built a more extensive cabin on what is now Washington Boulevard. In 1827 Biddle married Hannah Kneeland and they started to cultivate land east of present-day Scott Road. Their family grew to over 20 people and by 1830 they had moved their farm 4 miles (6 km) south to what is now Elmira Avenue. In 1835 they built another large cabin on the site of today's Elmira Mall parking lot, which remains standing today as one of the most prominent buildings in town. By 1840 Springfield consisted of about 100 homes with a population of around 200 people. In 1847 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, making Springfield one of the first major cities in America to have an official government presence. At this time many residents from rural areas voted for him because they felt he would help them improve their lives while he was in office. After his inauguration Lincoln visited Springfield several times and became very popular there among his constituents due to his good works as well as his warmth towards local businesses and citizens alike. One such good work that Lincoln accomplished during his brief time in office was helping start local newspapers which greatly increased communication within the city limits! After just four years as Mayor Lincoln left Springfield for Chicago where he continued various public service positions until 1865 when he resigned due to ill health at age 73 years old! Today much like it did back then, Springfield remains an incredibly vibrant community with its own unique culture that has helped keep it thriving for centuries! Many businesses still operate within town limits including banks, restaurants, theaters, etc., all while continuing to contribute important economic development into downtown Springfield!

Springfield, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Sangamon County. The population was 72,210 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Sangamon County. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois. The first Springfield settlers arrived on the Fox River in 1795. The town was platted in 1815 by James Kneeland and others under an Act of Congress authorized by Secretary of War Simon Cameron. A post office called "Springfield" was established in 1817, and became a part of Sangamon County after being defined as such by an act passed by Congress on January 3, 1818. The first school for black students opened its doors in Springfield on March 4, 1870. In 1915, African American soldiers from World War I served during World War II as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). Many African Americans worked at local businesses and churches while serving their country; some are buried in Springfield's National Cemetery there today. In 1954, both villages were merged into one municipality under then-Mayor John Wirths' leadership; however, Mayor Wirths resigned two years later due to health issues before anything could be done about merging those villages again into one municipality or annexing any other village within Sangamon County into Springfield proper - something that would have required voter approval because annexations within Sangamon County were not considered part of municipal government In 1966–1967 voters approved annexing Ozark Township to form a new City/County entity known as "Springfield Township". However this annexation did not take place until July 1969 when Community Board 5 voted to annex portions of unincorporated Cook County which made up what had been Ozark Township prior to that date including much rural land located east and northwest of downtown Chicago Heights which make up most parts now included within Springfield since Cook Countys annexation went through without any public input or opposition
