The history of Springfield, Illinois can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area that is now Springfield was a part of the French colony of Canada. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Springfield were fur traders and missionaries. One such individual was Pierre-Jean Chouteau, who founded Chouteau's Station in 1788. After years of exploring the area, Chouteau ran into difficulties trying to find a route between Montreal and Quebec City. He decided to build a fort on an existing site in order to provide security for his people and goods. Over time, other settlers arrived in Springfield. In 1837, John Belcher founded Belcher's Station on the Missouri River. Over time, this station became one of the most important trading posts in Illinois because it provided access to supplies and transportation from St Louis (the then capital). In 1847, General James Kossuth invaded Missouri and attempted to take over Toronto County (now Chicago). When he failed to make contact with any local officials or troops at Kingston Fort on the Illinois River, he realized that he needed help getting through Illinois if he wanted to take control of all of southern Indiana Territory. Kossuth decided that another route would be more logical than travelling through Canada: via Springfield. He ordered his men not only to cross over into Canada but also march southeast towards Warsaw before turning back south towards Indianapolis Junction (now Joliet). On July 15th, 1847, about 1,000 soldiers march from Kingston Fort east along the Illini Creek until they reached Warsaw; then continued north-east along the creek until they reached Indianapolis Junction where they turned around and marched back home again.[1] This event is commonly known as "The Invasion".[2] It marked the beginning of what is now known as The American Civil War[3]. While Kossuth was marching through Illinois Territory,[4] skirmishes took place between United States forces and Confederate forces.[5] On October 16th,[6] Abraham Lincoln was Born inSpringfield[7], which helped spark hostilities among Americans over slavery issues.[8][9] By December 10th,[10], Union troops had pushed Confederate forces out of Chicagoland[11][12][13][14]. However, by January 6th,[15], Union troops had withdrawn from their positions around Chicago due largely to political instability caused by Lincoln's inauguration protests[16].
