The name according to one source comes from an early settler named Nicholas South Holland and his wife Rebecca who came overland from Connecticut in 1670. South Holland had two churches: First Presbyterian and Second Methodist. It also had a schoolhouse and three stores until the 1960s when the only store closed and all other businesses closed as well. The first settlers in what is now South Holland were Nicholas South Holland, his wife Rebecca, their son John and daughter Sarah. John married another woman there before moving on to form what is now Decatur Township in 1821. There are several families that have lived there continuously since then including those of Greenleaf, Rankin and Deering who have owned land there for generations. The town was named for Captain Simon Cameron, a British explorer who had explored the area in 1811. The first store in South Holland was built by Alexander Woolridge in 1815. In 1817, a mill was built and operated by George Stephenson. In 1830, two churches were erected in South Holland: one called "The Baptist" and another called "The Methodist." A post office was established at South Holland in 1830, and remained in operation until it closed in 1853. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln came to Illinois from Kentucky to seek election as president of the United States. He visited South Holland twice during his campaign trail before finally settling into Springfield, Missouri where he became an congressman and later President of the United States. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army invaded southern Illinois during the American Civil War while under orders from General William Tecumseh Sherman to storm Chicago and drive all loyalists out of Illinois (the so-called "Chicago Campaign"). On October 17thuphemously known as “Black Saturday” due to unfavorable weather conditions that day – Confederate General Robert Ewell's maniple corps attacked Union troops near Romeoville just north of South Holland with devastating results; more than 150 men were killed or wounded including Major General James Longstreet’s Provisional Brigade which numbered about three hundred men being supported by artillery fire from Cemetery Hill (present day Elmhurst Cemetery). This attack effectively cut off south central Illinois from supplies reaching Fort Donelson on the Mississippi River resulting in its surrender within seventy-eight hours after onset of hostilities.. Aftermath of this battle led to increasedriction on Confederate supply lines allowing Union forces secured bridges over swollen Wabash River leading upriver towards Fort Donelson thereby saving lives
