South Holland, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,824 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Lake County. South Holland was founded in 1847 by General James Wilkinson and his family as a small community on the banks of the Chicago River. The village developed into a town in 1872 when it became part of Cook County. In 1962, South Holland merged with neighboring Westchester to form one of the largest cities in Illinois. The economy of South Holland is focused on manufacturing and services such as health care and education; however, it has also become home to many businesses that are not directly related to these industries but rather provide unique services or products to those who are within their borders. The city has been designated as a global center for advanced Manufacturing research by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). South Holland is located on an area that once constituted much of what is now Northwestern Illinois; this land was first reserved by Spain for future Missions de Estudiantes y Emigrados (Missions for Students and Immigrants), which were established along theChicago River between 1785 and 1800. A year later, on November 1st offering similar news about land grants being made available for purchase through channels like ad valorem taxation instead of purchase from individual residents or landowners: "Captain Lawton's grant...was very acceptable because it provided 60 acres (21 hectares) cornering what still constitutes most of today's south side [of] Chicago Avenue". Today South Holland remains an agricultural powerhouse thanks largely to its fertile soils which have allowed farmers throughout much of Midwest America access to quality produce since before refrigeration even existed! The National Guard has been a part of the American society for centuries. In 1792, George Washington established the Continental Army and the National Guard to provide manpower for the war effort. The first national guard units were raised in response to the panic that followed Lexington and Concord (1775). The first unit was constituted on July 16, 1776. It was called the Maryland Regiment. In 1814, President James K. Polk ordered all United States militias into active service in Mexican-American War. This created a new sense of urgency among patriotic Americans to supply their own military with arms and supplies necessary for its wartime mission. As a result, Congress passed an act on September 25, 1814 giving each state three regiments of militia infantry and one regiment of artillery (the Michigan Regiment). On April 9, 1861, during Civil War, Governor Abraham Lincoln called up all male citizens over twenty-one years old who could bear arms into military service in order to protect our southern neighbor from secession by Confederate forces. On July 26th same year Missourians answered this call with similar fervor as their northern counterparts when they ratified an act authorizing formation of companies even though they were not under martial law at that time. When President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on November 14th 1865 both Illinois State Troopers and Ulysses S Grant’s cavalry were dispatched to investigate at Ford’s Theatre after hearing reports that shots had been fired within the theater itself. When they arrived there found only three men dead and six wounded; no evidence indicated any violence or insurrection took place within the theater whatsoever! A plaque erected in his honor still stands today at Ford’s Theatre Park just inside front door!!!

In 1865, a general store and blacksmith shop were built west of Main Street which became known as "The forge" later being renamed "Hutchins."
