South Holland, Illinois is a town in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,695 as of the 2010 census. The name means "south of the river" in Dutch. It was platted on November 11, 1836 by General John Fritchey and Captain Nathan Sibley. South Holland is located at (41.329575, -89.870588). The first settlement in what is now South Holland was made on December 15, 1806 by Job Ewing and his family from Yorkville Township in Crawford County, Indiana Territory. On March 4, 1809 a group of Moravian missionaries sent by German Emperor Karl Wilhelm I arrived in what is now Macoupin County to help settle the area between Chicago and Rockford; they named their new settlement after Johannes (Johannes) Hendrik Scheffer who had come to America with them from Düsseldorf am Rhein about two years earlier. When Scheffer died on October 7th of that year near Chicago – less than 10 miles from where he had landed – his widow Johanna married Swiss-born farmer Friedrich Haaswaldt who became a part of theCREM movement which aimed to spread Christianity through education and agriculture among Native American Indians around central Illinois and into present day Wisconsin and Iowa Territory. According to one account: Friedrich Haaswaldt took great pride in having baptized more Indian children than any other person during his lifetime... So when it came time for him to move away from his home near village Schaumburg (now Schererville), all but five members of his immediate family accompanied him across the Great Lakes Westenland ferry over the Des Plaines River into north-central Illinois... In spite of being outnumbered six to one by settlers numbering in excess of 2,000 citizens or even more militia available for military service at that time there were no reports until long after Haaswaldt's death that violence or disturbance occurred during this initial migration westward into what would become south central Illinois...What did take place next cannot be accurately described as a revolution as such because most people involved either willingly followed Haaswaldnacht's orders or were forced out following heavy fighting which began almost immediately upon arrival... Nonetheless several roads leading into today's southcentral Illinois were laid down specifically as routes leading directly from Schaumburg all the way upriver to where Quincy now stands; these roads are still traveled today by motorists traveling along I-88 corridor heading northwest out of downtown Chicago towards Decatur Junction Accordingly given thisEyewitness Account it can be inferred that some sort or violence did occur during this early period following Johannus Hendrikscheff's death however it was not necessarily revolutionary nor destructive as has traditionally been portrayed

South Holland, Illinois was originally a part of the United States of America. The area that is now South Holland was first organized as a town in 1836. In 1847, it became a village and in 1855, it became a town. As of the 2010 census, South Holland had a population of 9,883. The first settlers to this area were white fur traders from Canada who arrived in 1824. They started trading with the Native Americans and began to build up trade relationships that would last for many years. By 1830, they had founded several small settlements within what is now South Holland Township. The American Fur Company (AFC) was founded in 1830 by John Jacob Astor and his brothers Nathaniel and James Astor. The AFC Trading Post at the mouth of the Des Plaines River served as an important center for fur trading operations throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois until it closed its doors in 1845. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States and on December 6th he announced his intention to make land grants to selected citizens of Illinois “in lieu of all taxes” which he believed would encourage settlement within the state by creating more opportunity for its citizens. On February 8th 1840, Lincoln issued an Executive Order entitled “An Ordinance For Regulating Commerce With Foreign Nations And Amending Other Laws” which outlined how these gifts would be divided among those who made submissions or purchases from foreign nations during his term as President; 50% would go to farmers living east of Chicago while 25% went to businessmen west of Chicago (the original boundary between Chicago and Milwaukee). The first settlers in South Holland, Illinois were farmers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. By 1830, the population of South Holland was 50 people and by 1835, it had grown to 100 people. The town was named after a small community in England that had been founded by Methodists. The first school in South Holland was built in 1836 and operated for one year. In 1839, a post office was established in South Holland and mail service began to the town from Jacksonville, Florida. In 1840, a store opened and produced goods for local residents. A blacksmith shop also opened in 1840. In 1850, a sawmill was built and continued operation until 1860. Around this time,reek railroad began service to the town from Chicago. In 1865, a courthouse was built and served as the town's government center for many years. The last sawmill closed down in 1966 due to technological advancements which made manufacturing more difficult than it used to be.
