South Holland is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now South Holland werethe Potawatomi tribe and their descendants who arrived from Indiana about 1800. They built the first permanent settler's home on a bend in the Kankakee River around 1801. The first school was established in 1828 by Rev. Jonas Mayhew and soon afterwards other schools followed suit; by 1845 there were ten public schools in South Holland. During the years between 1830 and 1860 many Mormons came through Illinois settling near where present day South Holland is located on their way to Utah or Nebraska. Many of these early settlers died during wagon train accidents while traveling over rough roads or crossing streams which made travel very dangerous for both men and women at that time. The community of South Holland began to form when several families bought land together east of Kankakee Creek about 1840-1845 and started farming it using traditional methods including Tillage, hoeing corn, planting beans, raising cows and pigs etc.. In 1850 John Hynes set up his mill on the current site of the old post office which began producing flour for local consumption as well as exporting to nearby towns such as Wheeling (WV) and Decatur (IL). In 1861 Jno Piggott organized a granite quarry out of some of the larger boulders found along Highway 58 just east of where he lived today; this led to construction throughout much of village beginning with three large blocks used for pounding into foundation stones & then turned into homesites following an elaborate system called “pinch point” building whereby each house had two stories plus basement – one story above ground floor & one story below street level! A sawmill continued operations until 1901 when it was destroyed by a fire; however, initial plans Callahan Bros., makers of Bakelite products had for constructing a dam across Kankakee River caused economic collapse leading eventually to abandonment/ demolition most likely due to environmental damage caused by utility companies working upstream! A few businesses still operate today such as Laundromat (opened in 1953), Pizza Hut (1986), Chipotle Mexican Grill (2006) & Dunkin' Donuts(2009). One popular tourist spot within town limits is Holy Cross Church – also known locally as “the Mother Church” because so many Catholics call here for services every day before going off to work or shopping downtown; additionally there are several restaurants inside & outside townlimits including Burger King(1989), Home Depot(1996), Papa John's Pizza(2007) + numerous craft stores all clustered around corner mall complex bounded by Saginaw Road on one side & Maple Avenue on another! South Holland, Illinois was a small town located in the northeast corner of the state of Illinois. It first appeared on the map in 1824 when it was named after John C. South, an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from that location from 1821 to 1825. The town's earliest settlers were white men and their families who had migrated from central Indiana during the early 1800s. By 1860, there were only 7 residents living in South Holland; by 1970, there were only 2 remaining residents. The town's history can be traced back to its founding as a small settlement on May 25, 1824. At that time, it consisted of just 10 people and was located about 12 miles east of what is now Aurora, Illinois. For many years, South Holland functioned as a farming community with heavy reliance on agriculture and cattle raising. In addition to its agricultural efforts, South Holland also manufactured products such as hayricks and shoes. In 1870, when the Chicago & Northwestern Railway arrived in South Holland via Aurora railway station, the town quickly became one of its most important industrial centers. The railroad brought new life to local businesses and helped spur growth within the community over time. In turn, this led to increased prosperity for both locals and those residing nearby; by 1970,South Holland had become one of the wealthiest towns in Illinois thanks to its strong economy and sizable population size.
