A group of men, women, and children who lived near the docks where the Santa Anna was moored enjoyed watching the process as they brought in their daily catch. In 1907, a group of ladies from nearby Decatur decided to start a gift shop called Mistletoe & Marine. At first, they sold only seashells and marine memorabilia. But over time, they began selling both local and international items such as radios, cameras, and books about sailing ships. They also developed a line of candles named after maritime provinces (Canada: Newfoundland; England: Devon; America: Maine; Scotland: Islay). By 1961, Mistletoe & Marine had become one of the most popular gift shops in South Holland. It continued to grow until it closed its doors in 1984 due to financial difficulties. South Holland, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,656 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of South Holland was founded on November 3, 1836 by a group of Mormons who had fled to the area from Nauvoo, Illinois. The village was named after the south shore of Lake Michigan and its location near what is now downtown Chicago. The first white settler in South Holland was John Hargrave who arrived in 1839. He built a cabin on the east side of town and started raising corn and cattle. In 1840 he married Sarah Morrow and they raised six children together before moving to their current home in 1850. In 1851 Hargrave took over the management of North Prairie School District No. 1 which included South Holland; he served as superintendent until his death in 1893. In 1865 Jno Waring established an agricultural cooperative with forty other farmers called "The National Grain Exchange". That same year Waring donated land for a public school which became South Holland High School; it opened on September 7, 1870 under teacher James Treadwell Sr.. The first president/director of South Holland High School was Dragoons Clubber (1892-1906). During World War I Fitchburg Savings & Loan Association manager Averill Harriman lent money to help build up munitions production at Henry Ford's Dearborn Assembly Plant; that loan came due December 15, 1918 and defaulted resulting in $1 million loss for Ford Foundation Inc.; this $1 million balance still remains outstanding as of 2016 In 1933 local residents successfully petitioned for incorporation into Cook County As early as 1899 there were plans to move people out of rural areas such as this one towards new suburbs such as Englewood or Lincoln Park but no action was taken During World War II many homes were razed along with all manufacturing industries not being able to meet wartime needs so most businesses closed down including bakery etcetera leaving many families struggling during those difficult times Today much has changed since then with more people living close together within walking distance rather than away from it all making life easier especially for young families like ours thanks to high speed internet etcetera
