South Holland, Illinois is a town located in the south-central part of the United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Holland was founded in 1836 as a small settlement named East Aurora by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia TParker Polk. The name of the town derived from their home state of Illinois. The first post office in South Holland was established on December 12, 1836, and it operated until it was replaced by one in 1841. The first store in South Holland was built on Main Street in 1840. In 1850, South Holland had two churches: One Congregational and one Presbyterian. By 1870, there were twelve businesses in town with a total payroll of $4,848 cash register value. During the early 1800s, many farmers whoowned land around what is now South Holland began to plant corn and other crops because they could not get enough water to irrigate their fields using traditional methods such as irrigation systems or ditches dug through hillsides into deep valleys where water pooled under low ground layers of sedimentary rocks which prevented sunlight from reaching these plants during most months of the year

South Holland, Illinois was founded in 1827 by Captain Samuel H. Kapp and his family. The town was named after the Dutch village of South Holland, which had been burned down in 1672. After years of growth, South Holland became a city in 1881. It is now a suburb of Chicago. The first settlers to South Holland were farmers who arrived from New England in 1827. They started a small farm near the present-day intersection of I-55 and Addison Avenue. The Kapp family continued to live there until they moved to Illinois in 1841. Samuel H., Captains Samuel Kapp and John Larkin, all born in Massachusetts, were the sons of Nicholas Kapp who had emigrated from Amsterdam (now Rotterdam) with his family in 1795. In 1830, Captains Samuel and John Kapp married Martha Ann Van Heckerecht widow of Peter Cornelis Van Heckerecht Jr., one of the original settlers at South Holland on April 25th (the same day that General George Washington was inaugurated as President). This gave birth to six children: three boys (Samuel, John and Nicholas), two girls (Fanny and Maria), and one son Philip Jobst Kapp who would become Mayor of South Holland from 1961-1967 & 1974-1981. In 1881, when Chicago became an independent city, the population of South Holland decreased because most people left for better opportunities in the great metropolis. However, thanks toermanagement by mayor Edward Jelinek and City Councilmember James Fenton Sr., South Holland experienced significant growth over the next few decades culminating with its incorporation as a city on November 3rd 1921!
