South Holland, Illinois is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania about 25 miles north of Philadelphia. It was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1848 and has since grown to a population of over 10,000 residents. South Holland is home to several notable institutions, including St. John's University, which was founded in 1868; The Grove School, which was built in 1927 and is one of the few privately funded schools in the United States; and South Holland High School, which became a comprehensive school in 2003. The town was named after Samuel Hollis (1796-1879), an American Baptist missionary who traveled through the area in 1848. Hollis wanted to find a location where he could continue preaching his religious messages while also providing support for local farmers. South Holland's moniker derives from its proximity to Philadelphia - just fifteen miles away - as well as the fact that it lies on the banks of the Delaware River. As time passed, other settlers began moving into South Holland and its vicinity. In 1866, Reverend James Wetherall established a mission station at what is now known as Watertown while Reverend Augustus Noble opened a missions school at Bethlehem shortly thereafter. In 1870, Reverend George Hinkle started teaching German language classes at what is now called Northampton Township before founding Holy Cross Catholic Church on May 7th of that year. By 1880, there were already over 150 people living within five miles of South Holland proper! In 1902-1903, Reverend John Ladd opened up what is now known as Grove School here in South Holland with eleven students - only four years after it had been established! A select group of boys from nearby Springboro worked together to begin construction on Grove School's first building back in 1902! Today Grove School remains one of America's most iconic educational institutions with more than 120 undergraduate students and twenty-four graduate students currently enrolled! Hollis Boulevard runs throughSouth Holland like an artery feeding all manner of businesses and services into this vibrant community - everything from clothing stores to banks provide basic needs such as food or gas for their customers right down to emergency responders when necessary! The earliest residents of South Holland were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops on their properties. With its close proximity to Chicago and its growing population of landowning families, South Holland quickly became known as one of the most important agricultural communities in Illinois. In 1837, John Winchester purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day Chicago from David Dudley for $5 per acre. This purchase made South Holland one of the largest farming towns in Illinois. John Winchester soon began building his own homes and businesses in South Holland – a process that would continue until after World War II. By 1850,John Winchester had become one of Illinois’s leading landowners and entrepreneurs. During the 19th century there were several key milestones that influenced how South Holland developed as an agricultural community: In 1847–48 Abraham Lincoln visited Northfield (now part of Evanston) while he was on his way to becoming President; during this visit he stopped at Mr. Winchester's farm on Mount Pleasant Road near present-day Northfield; this event helped create positive relations between Northfield residents and Mr. Lincoln's administration later on! In 1865–66 local citizens voted to cede all but 3 square miles (10 km2) of their township to Rock Island County; this decision allowed for more efficient agricultural production within their boundaries! From 1867 through 1886 various school systems operated out-of-town Elementary Schools located adjacent to private farms orr Wintersetter Road), which contributed importantly towards village growth!: these schools eventually evolved into high school programs over time!: during these years many talented youth left agriculture for better opportunities elsewhere
