The regiment was disbanded after war ended and many of its members joined other units. However, a few soldiers from the Third Indiana Infantry remained in South Holland and continued to give gifts to the community. One such soldier was Capt. John Capps who donated land for a school and chapel in 1891. In 1923, Capt. Capps' son, Lt. Col John Capps Jr., donated another piece of land to help fund military operations in neighboring townsfolk during World War II. After his father's death, John Capps Jr.'s wife conveyed all of their gifts to local organizations and schools within South Holland Township until her death in 1984. South Holland, Illinois is a small town in the state of Illinois. It is located on the southern border of Cook County and on the edge of Lake Michigan. The population was 9,776 at the 2010 census. The largest city in South Holland is Westville. The area that now makes up South Holland was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1634. In 1815, when Illinois became a United States territory, South Holland was included within it. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II, when manufacturing became more important in the area. The population of South Holland peaked in 1960 at 12,500; however, it has since declined modestly to 9,776 as of the 2010 census. According to historian Betty Jepson, "the village [of] South Holland...was founded by Pieter de Mantegaen (1634-1710), one of about fifty Dutch families who had come overland from Rotterdam during the highlands' European colonization period (1650-70). He and his descendants were among those who took up land south of Chicago on what are now State Street and Ontario Avenue." "Mantegaen arrived with his family early in 1635 and soon began to cultivate maize crops which he planted between large ditches near his home and barn." After years of growth and success with these crops, Mantegaen decided to build a home and store complex around them—an idea that would be copied throughout much of America during this time period. In addition to housing himself and his family members for some time afterwards (he also constructed a second house nearby), Mantegaen decided to open up some farmland into orchard production so that he could sell goods directly to consumers rather than through traders or wholesalers. This enterprise would become known as 'Manteca's Orchard.'" These days both buildings still stand side by side—a reminder not just of how successful Mantegaen's ventures were but also how even today many people live close enough together for easy communication."
