South Elgin, Illinois is a town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. South Elgin is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Aurora to the north, Elmhurst to the east, Streamwood to the south and Glen Ellyn to the west. The town was founded in 1837 as a small community on present-day Arlington Road and Dearborn Street. In 1850 it moved from its original location on Arlington Road to what is now Eisenhower Boulevard between Oak Brook Avenue and Des Plaines Avenue. By 1870, South Elgin had a school, hotel, grocery store and six churches. At that time it was one of twenty towns comprising Park Ridge Township in DuPage County. In 1892 South Elgin became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor/Council system and adopted a new political slogan "Elected For You." That year it also became home to Illinois' first electric light company with two generation streetcars running through town on Roosevelt Boulevard connecting Elmhurst and Northbrook avenues with downtown Chicago. In 1916 South Elgin annexed part of neighboring Streamwood which at that time had 4,000 residents but only 1 post office due to growth within Streamwood itself over the years including: White Sands Golf Course (1896), Glacier Point Resort (1911), Silver Springs Spa (1915) and finally our current day shopping center known as Century Mall with anchor stores Sears Holding Company & JCPenney Incorporated in 1978 followed by Macy's Incorporated in 1984 bringing shopping malls statewide for all types of consumers since then! South Elgonians have always been proud of their history; many properties such as our schools/homes dating back more than 125 years are still standing today! South Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County. The population was 5,269 as of the 2010 census. The name "South Elgin" is derived from the French word "Élgin," meaning "the field that covers." The original home of the community was on South Elm Street and it began to be called "Elgin" in 1853. It took until 1907 for the community's name to be changed to its current form. The early settlers of South Elgin were farmers and their families who operated sheep and cattle ranches. They also raised corn, beans, wheat, sugar beets, potatoes and other vegetables. By 1870, there were 2 businesses in South Elgin - one a grocery store and one a blacksmith shop - both run by white merchants. In 1872, two brothers founded an insurance company which became one of the largest in Illinois at that time. They also built a flour mill which they operated until 1906 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills in the area. In 1907, South Elgin became part of Cook County and through annexation by nearby Skokie (1907), it grew even faster than neighboring towns did. As Chicago increased its population density during this time period, so too did South Elgin's significance within village boundaries; however, it still remained relatively small with only about 1,500 residents as of 1930 according to Census records. However despite its size limitations – compared to neighboring communities with mucharger populations – over time South Elganians have made significant contributions both Locally and statewide in many ways including politics (elected officials include 1 mayor since 1978), arts & culture (through organizations such as local symphonic orchestras) and business (many manufacturers). One example is that nearly all members who served on Cook County Board from 1947-1978 were born or raised in or around South Elgin- including future U S Congressman Joe Walsh (R-IL) who was born into a family dealership hereabouts before going on to serve 12 terms representing IL’s 2nd congressional district starting in 1983 thru 2011! Another notable success story occurred when entrepreneur Dean Witter bought most of what is now known as Sears Holdings Corp., back then just another department store chain struggling under duress after World War II hard times caused ordered closings throughout ‘45 & ‘46 across America—one might say “the Great Depression”—in order for Sears Kmart Inc., heirs apparent [to] open upemptying stores throughout Copyrighted United States patents nationwide…a feat unparalleled anywhere else!!! In short: lots has happened hereabouts since those 3 men started selling clothes way back THEN!!!
