South Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in the town of Elgin, Ill. The population was 3,872 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has been working to build its own economy since it was first settled in 1847. South Elgin has experienced several waves of industrialization over the years as various businesses have arisen and died out. In recent years, however, there has been an effort to revive the town with new businesses and projects that are hoping to bring more economic development to South Elgin. The first settlers in South Elgin were two families from Michigan who came overland through Minnesota on their way to California in 1847. They named their settlement after General John Pemberton’s home village in England, which they had seen while traveling across America. When General Pemberton returned from his trip to California he discovered that there was no market for his products so he abandoned his venture there and moved his family back eastward along the Great Lakes into what is now Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, some farmers around Lake Michigan started growing crops using waterpower brought over by paddleboats and canoes from upriver. This began what would become known as “the Water Power Revolution” in America because it allowed farmers to grow crops without relying on large rivers or lakes that could be too difficult or dangerous to navigate safely
The first permanent settler in what is now South Elgin, Illinois was Jacob Perkins. He and his family arrived in 1837 and began to build a log cabin on the site of present day Palmer Road. The area that is now South Elgin was originally part of Decatur County, Illinois. On November 3rd, 1838, the county commissioners voted to create a new county named after Samuel Gist and it was organized on December 1st. The first courthouse in South Elgin was built on this site. In 1849, the United States Post Office moved from Rock Island to South Elgin and opened its doors on Main Street. This town became an important center for mail delivery because it sat at the junction of several routes that led to Chicago and other cities. Southern Illinois Normal University (SIU) was founded here in 1888 and remained an important educational institution until it merged with Northwestern ILU in 2002. On April 14th, 1865, General Forrest's forces attacked Union forces at Peoria Bridge over the Mississippi River. This battle is known as the Battle of Peoria Bridge and resulted in many dead or wounded soldiers and civilians. In commemoration of this event, a statue honoring General Forrest has been erected near nearby Clintonville Landing State Park
