The USS Prairie (SS-316) was the first vessel to be sunk as part of the war effort by Japanese forces and her crew were posthumously awarded the George Washington Cross for their actions. Pete Glynn is one of many descendants of Petty Officer First Class James A. Hannon who lived in South Elgin during World War II and remembers that there were several occasions when navy gift history was present on our town’s shoreline. Glynn recalls one particular occasion when a group of marines disembarked from a destroyer and distributed gifts to local citizens before departing for their battlefronts overseas. He also recalls seeing HMS Illustrious carrying supplies into port during this time period; this shipment represented a significant boost to local morale as it provided some much-needed foodstuffs for civilians living throughout Nazi Germany . The history of the navy deployed gift story in South Elgin, Illinois goes back to the early 1800s. The area was then known as the “Gold Coast” for its abundant gold and silver mines. During this time, sailors from all over the United States would come to town to find employment. One such sailor was a man named John Tappan. He worked at a local brewery and when he wasn’t sailing his ship or working at the mine, he would go down to South Elgin and buy groceries. Tappan is credited with starting the first grocery store in South Elgin. In 1825, John Tappan retired from his job on the Gold Coast and moved to Illinois. He started a small grocery store in what is now South Elgin, Illinois and soon began selling goods shipped from Boston and other ports along the Great Lakes. His store became very successful and quickly became one of the largest in town. In 1829, John Tappan married Sarah Smedley who was also living in South Elgin at that time. They had three children: Johnathon (1830-1915), Sarah (1832-1912) and Edwin (1835-1900). Sarah Smedley died in 1912 but her husband continued operating his business until his death in 1915. Johnathon continued running the store until 1945 when it closed its doors for good. Today, remnants ofJohnathon Tappan’s grocery store still stand within walking distance of downtown South Elgin!
South Elgin is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Elgin was platted in 1853 by Alexander Hennepin and David Rice as part of a large farm called Prairie Grove. The name "Elgin" was chosen because of its location on the Illinois River about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of downtown Chicago. The Village of South Elgin organized itself into a town on November 3, 1865, from portions of Aurora and North Aurora Townships. On December 12, 1871, the village merged with Aurora Township to form Aurora Township – South Elgin combination Township #1. On February 15, 1893, it merged with Arlington Township to form Arlington Township – Park District combination Township #2. On January 1, 1907 it became an unincorporated community when Park District No 2 withdrew from Consolidated Government control effective January 1st due to budget cuts caused by World War I; however it continued to be governed by its own board of trustees until that date under provisions set forth in the charter granted to it by Consolidated Government in 1907-1911 which provided for such autonomy within Monmouth County government while still remaining subject to countywide governance through the County Board of Education and other county agencies including Parks Department as well as city services operated through park districts established therein-. The first US Navy ship to be deployed was the USS Constitution, which was commissioned in 1801. The Constitution served as flagship of Commodore Joshua Barney during American independence battles against Great Britain. In 1860, when CSS Sumter became active off Charleston, South Carolina, Commodore Barney ordered his Constitution’s powder magazine to be set on fire as a warning to British ships operating off that port. After Confederate forces captured Charleston in April 1861, Commodore Barney ordered his Constitution’s powder magazine also destroyed as a gesture of defiant honor for their fallen compatriots. USS Enterprise was named after Admiral John Cushing who served aboard her during World War II and later became Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Patuxent River Maryland where she operated until her retirement in 1964. During World War II she sailed with President Franklin D Roosevelt’s Fleet Air Arm and participated in numerous campaigns including Normandy Invasion and Battle of Leyte Gulf. She is credited with sinking three Japanese submarines while underVPAdmiral Ernest Jellicoe’s command during Operation Murmansk - one off Japan and two near Guam]. On 7 May 1957 she took part in an exercise nuclear strike mission against Kwajalein Atoll using Polaris missiles deliver by two VC-130 aircraft flown from RAF Waddington England] . South Elgin, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of South Elgin was incorporated in 1881 and later annexed by the town. The first settlers in what is now South Elgin were farmers who arrived from nearby Peoria in 1832. They founded a log settlement on a small stream called Big Creek which they named after their kinsman, Big John. In 1834, two men from Peoria named Cass and Green built a sawmill on the creek and started trading with local farmers. By 1840, some fifty residents had settled in what is now South Elgin; most were farm workers or artisans who manufactured goods for local markets or exported agricultural products to other cities such as St Louis and Cincinnati. In 1847, Nicholas Ballou purchased land east of present-day South Elgin from John Pritchard for $2 per acre; Ballou renamed the land East Elm Street after himself and his brother Elijah (later known as "Eli" ). Ballou began construction of a large brick building which he used as his home until his death in 1860. This building still stands today – it is located on current day Elm Street between North Main Street and West Stevenson Boulevard – serving as one of the few remaining reminders of early south elgin development. In 1861, when Illinois became an independent country following the Mexican–American War, SouthElgin's incorporation into McLean County followed suit; this event marked an important change for the community since prior to this time it had been part of Cook County (the then-larger county that included Chicago). During its incorporation period, SouthElgin also experienced rapid growth thanks to increased trade with neighboring towns such as Aurora and Lombard; during this time many new businesses were established including a carpenter shop operated by Abraham Lincoln before he became president in 1865; post office which opened on December 12th, 1862; insurance company which was organized on January 1st 1865 by J H Richardson; three churches: First Baptist Church founded by Reverend James Lappin February 21st 1865 (now demolished); Second Presbyterian Church April 7th 1865 ; Third Episcopal Church October 15th 1870 ; all these churches remain extant today and are within walking distance of each other across Elm street . In 1886 much progress had been made toward developing what would become SouthElgon Township but due to lack of resources problems arose quickly that led to several years worth of litigation culminating with incorporation into Mclean County upon request from A Sauers family who owned eighty percent of all taxable property within township boundaries . Despite these difficulties however future development proceeded rapidly with major projects such as completion of Lincoln Highway (now I-90) just five miles away & establishment Of Southern Illinois University - now UIUC - just two miles away . Today much evidence remains visible throughout township showing how significant these events were both culturally & economically alike .
