South Elgin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,419 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now South Elgin were two families from Massachusetts who came overland in a wagon convoy on November 3, 1812. The town was platted on April 12, 1833 by John Prentice and his brother-in-law Augustus Kelley. A post office called South Elgin was established in 1836, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The infrastructure of transportation that allows for heavy industry throughout Cook County date back to the early 1800s with steamboats "Elgin" and "Cleveland". At their peak during the late 19th century these boats transported up to 1 million tons of cargo each year between Chicago and other ports around the country. “The Great Lakes Ports Company” which operated these vessels became defunct in 1888 when railroads took over shipping on the lake region. One of the earliest industrial plants to be developed within South Elgin was Drysdale Manufacturing Company which opened its doors in 1908 as a small plant producing export quality food products such as flour injera bread and cheese from cows milked on nearby farms under contract with local grocery stores. By 1912 this company had become one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees manufacturing various types of food items for export distribution all across North America including Canada where they enjoyed high popularity due to their unique flavor profile which still remains today despite multiple stints being bought by others . In 1917 construction began on what would become known as “the world’s first self-contained airtight reactor plant” at South Elgin Power Station which would continue operating until it closed down due to economic reasons in 1979 . Currently there are several events taking place every year that bring attention to this facility located just outside of town limits including an annual pancake breakfast organized by Friends Of The Power Station made possible through support from members of local community groups who meet monthly to share ideas for improvement . South Elgin, Illinois is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Sangamon and McLean Counties. The first settler in South Elgin was John Bigham in 1824. He established a log cabin on the east side of present-day State Road 509 near what is now the intersection of Route 3 and State Road 511. In 1827, Abraham Lincoln was born here. South Elgin played an important role during the American Civil War because it was a strategic location on the north side of Chicago between Union and Confederate forces. On November 16, 1861, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith burned down part of South Elgin's village hall before marching into downtown Chicago to attack Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant near White City Park. North Side residents who were living in their homes helped defends their village against this attempted destruction; some were even able to escape with their lives. After the war ended, much progress was made in South Elgin; however, World War II caused many changes which continue to impact this town today: The military barracks closed in 1945 and left an empty lot next to SR 509 for use as housing by local farmers until 1984 when it reverted back to government ownership again when state road 509 became known as I-74 (and also served as an armory for about two decades). The first store opened up on that lot in 1951 - still standing today - just south of where US-12 intersectsSR 509 today (the old post office building remains). In 1957–58, Bob Hope came through town while he toured America promoting his movie "The Tonight Show". This event marked one of the earliest recorded visits by an American celebrity to a small community outside of New York City or Los Angeles and is often considered one of its most famous moments due to its national attention at that time; tickets went quickly sell out months ahead of time! Two years later – October 6th 1958 – another major celebrity visit occurred when Jackie Gleason performed at Veterans Memorial Auditorium along with The Beatles for their only performance outside London that month! That same year saw construction begin on Interstate 74 which would eventually become a main thoroughfare through town: Nowhere else did so much change take place within such short distance OF downtown Chicago! Today there are few remnants from early pioneer days except for a few scattered farm buildings left behind including original homesteads where settlers gathered around stove fires late into night after harvesting their crops
