South Elgin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in South Elgin were farmers who arrived in 1820 from Pennsylvania. They started a gristmill on the west side of town and corn cribs on the east side. A post office was established in 1825 and by 1830 there were two churches and five schoolhouses in South Elgin. In 1836 a sawmill was built on the south side of town and soon afterwards other industries began to arrive including flour mills, tanning works, cheese factories, breweries and thermoplastic plants. In 1915 an electric light system was installed in South Elgin making it one of the first towns in Cook County to have that type of service. The community's name originated with John Pile (1810-1888), who donated land for a public school system which would serve all residents of his township along with north Aurora Township and parts of Ravenswood Township (now Elmhurst). During World War II South Elgin became an important manufacturing center as many local companies produced munitions such as Bendix Ballistics Company, Armour Manufacturing Company and Grand Central Paper Corporation. In 1945 Northrop Grumman Corporation moved its headquarters from Danbury Connecticut to what is now Midtown Center near Willis Tower after acquiring nearby Decatur Airlines corporation

In 1847, South Elgin became the home of the first Methodist church in Illinois. The Rev. John Wesley founded this church in a small cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River. The congregation soon outgrew its original location and began to build their own building, which they completed in 1853. The Reverend J.H. Cary served as pastor from 1855-1866 and then from 1870-1872. During his tenure, South Elgin experienced significant growth and development; many new businesses were created and goods brought in by traders increased tenfold. In 1898, Rev. Wm Hays organized what would become known as the First Methodist Church of Chicago (later renamed as Methodism Bible College). At that time, South Elgin had only one school – an academy for young people – but it soon became an important center for education within the area. In 1925, Rev. Drury McAuley was installed as pastor of South Elgin’s first Methodist church after a long wait due to death or retirement from ministry at the age of 82 years old! He led the congregation through difficult times during World War II with unwavering optimism and dedication until his death in 1951 at age 94 years old; however, his legacy is still felt today with ministries centered around social justice issues such as poverty awareness and HIV/AIDS prevention work among others! South Elgin has experienced more than its share of changing fortunes over time; however, it retains a strong sense of community identity that has helped keep things fun and exciting for residents and visitors alike!
South Elgin was founded in 1853 by Shadrach Butler. The town became a station on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1865 and it was incorporated as a village in 1868. It became an incorporated city in 1893. South Elgin is located at (41.8609) N, (-87.6387) W.
