South Elgin, Illinois was the birthplace of coffee in 1865. The first crop of coffee beans were grown on a small farm near the town and were roasted by local slaves. According to the 2010 census, South Elgin has a population of 17,868. The community is located in Kane County and is bordered by the village of Elgin to the west, Galesburg to the south, Carbondale to the east, and Will County to the north. South Elgin was founded in 1854 as a post office and railroad town. The town had a population of 2,023 in 2000. It is now an agricultural community with a mainstay crop being corn. The first white settlers in what is now South Elgin arrived from Illinois around 1834. They were led by Capt. John Hickey who arrived at what is now West Point on April 12 that year with his family and six other men. On November 6th of that year they erected their log cabin on Prairie Creek near present-day North Carbondale Boulevard. By 1835 there were several hundred white settlers living in South Elgin according to one source while another said there were only ten or twelve families residing here at that time due to problems such as malaria hitting hard during those early years after European settlement was started (Langdon). This number would grow over time as more people came into this area looking for new land (Langdon). In 1856 two American Fur Company traders named George Muhlenberg and William Davenport decided to move their trading post from Fort Wayne Indiana upriver towards present day Carbondale so they could better observe Indian trade route (Langdon).
