South Elgin is located in Cook County, Illinois and was founded on November 11, 1847. The town was named for the plantation of South Elgin, which was east of the city of Chicago. The first post office in South Elgin was established on December 5, 1847. The first school in South Elgin was built on a lot that is now part of the downtown area. On January 1, 1860, the first railroad in Cook County was completed through South Elgin and it became known as the Chicago and North Western Railway.
