On December 1, 1861, the Illinois State Militia raised a regiment to fight for the Confederate States of America. This regiment was called the 2nd Regiment of Illini Volunteers. Colonel John A. Logan formed this unit and it fought in battles such as Selma and Corinth. The 2nd Regiment of Illini Volunteers was disbanded on April 15, 1865, after its members were mustered out of service.
South Elgin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. South Elgin is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first meetings of the Town Council were held on November 9, 1837. On February 24th of that year, the first plat for South Elgin was filed with the county recorder. The land was donated by James Hickey and Solomon Sheppard. In 1846, three blocks east of current day South Elm Street were laid out as “Greene” Cemetery which served as burial ground for many people in early South Elgin. It is interesting to note that when this block became part of town boundaries it continued to be called Greene until about 1889 when it changed its name to South Elm Street in honor of Amos S. Elmira who donated most of what today forms the downtown core and much of what now lies along both streets remains from his donation including some beautiful Victorian homes currently on First Avenue between State and Elm Streets known as “Elmira Place” years ago! In 1892-1893 an electric streetlight system was installed in south elgin through a grant from Mrs Stonington Freebish (wife of Major General John Prentice) during her visit to south elgin while on her way back home from visiting her sister in Quincy IL

South Elgin, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County and the seat of South Elgin Township. The city is located on the south shore of Lake Michigan and contains some of the largest manufacturing plants in the area. The history of South Elgin goes back to 1837 when Daniel Boone invents what is now called an "Elgin Arrow." In 1839, John Hoadly founded a mill here that manufactured flour for Chicagoans. The first store in town opened in 1840. By 1850, there were five stores and 100 inhabitants. In 1860 Indiana Avenue was built as part of a wagon road between Chicago and Rockford; this street became known as Illinois Avenue after Illinois became a state in 1868. This development led to increased business activity around town which made it easier for residents to get out into the community and interact with their surroundings. A fire destroyed most of downtown during lunchtime on July 6th 1903; however, firefighters saved many businesses from destruction including Mr & Mrs Magee's grocery store which still stands today (now part of Macy's). The Magees rebuilt their business within two weeks time and continued doing so for over 75 years until it burned down again on November 25th 2006 due to arson by juveniles! During World War II South Elgin produced munitions such as gasoline tanks and munitions used by General George Patton’s Third Army during Operation Market Garden in 1945 across Holland River Valley near Amsterdam/Watervliet township. South Elgin also manufactured radios used by American forces during World War II under license from Radio Corporation International (RCI). A local radio station WGBI began broadcasting from studios here on October 1st 1944 with programming including news bulletins from both Europe and Japan about operations taking place within those areas as well as music programsavers like Bing Crosby’s “Wonderful World Of Disney” program that aired every Saturday morning starting on October 14th 1944 through May 15th 1945 before ending its run due toArmy restrictions placed upon broadcasters operating close to military installations..
The city of Elgin was founded in 1814 by the brothers Elijah and David Cook. The town first grew around a logging camp called Camp Campbell, which was located on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1865, Elgin became a village after being incorporation by the Illinois General Assembly.
