Skokie is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 58,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Chicago and the seventh-largest municipality in Illinois. Skokie was founded on December 12, 1892 by John Augustus Kelley and his wife Clara as a small town on the banks of the Des Plaines River. It became a municipality on January 1, 1955. The area now comprising Skokie was first settled by farmers from eastern Canada who arrived during the early 1800s. In 1892, John Augustus Kelley and his wife Clara began to farm land that would later become part of what is now Skokie. On December 12, 1892, they made their first sale of land to residents of Chicago for $2 per acre (1/4th of an acre = $40). They soon realized that this location would be ideal for a small town as it had good soil and excellent access to water supplies. With help from friends and family, they built a house onsite in 1895. The first store opened its doors in 1897 with local farmer Jens Olsen as its president. In 1907, the Kelley's welcomed their third son into the world – Harry – and quickly started building family life here while they continued farming nearby; Harry eventually became Mayor of Skokie in 1957 when his father died suddenly after serving two terms as mayoralty candidate. In 1935–36 Wm Hargrave purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) near downtown Skokie from Mrs Crouse for $2 million dollars due to its potential development potential alone! This purchase set off much speculation throughout southern Illinois about just how valuable such an acquisition could be given that there were no major highways connecting northern Illinois with south central Chicago like there are today! At this time only 100 people lived within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Skokie – most living outside or east of downtown! By 1945 over 3000 people lived within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Chicago!! In 1951 Dixon native Mortimer Adelson sold 73 acres (27 hectares) located east of I-88 skirting Loop Business Park for $5 million dollars!!! This gave developers much hope that suburbanites living west or north of Downtown might finally have some opportunity to live close together within walking distance! Unfortunately not all expectations were met; many subdivisions established around Loop business park only attracted affluent professionals rather than everyday citizens who wanted easy access to jobs & shopping !! Today even though many people still reside within 5 miles (8 km)of Downtown Chicagoland’s center it can often feel quite lonely & isolated especially if you are looking for activities other than shopping !! On May 2nd 1997 voters passed Measure N which authorized annexation by Cook County if it approved an referendum selected by City Council stating “the residents thereof desire annexation by Cook County pursuant to article VIII section one(a), subparagraph one(A), paragraph three(B), Article XIII section one hundred thirty nine thousand four hundred fifty eight” However because annexation discussions then languished between village & county officials various lawsuits followed until finally resolution was reached whereby both village & county agree unanimously to negotiate negotiations under oath before arbitration board should any differences arise
