Skokie is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,631 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John Skokie in 1848 as part of the Peoria Settlement. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Skokie in 1848; they were Methodist missionaries who named their new community after one of their churches in Liverpool, England. By 1860, the population had swollen to over 100 and the town's first school opened that year. In 1865, a post office was established and soon became an important transportation hub for the area due to its location on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. In 1872, John Skokie donated land to establish a township (later village) and named it after himself. In 1916, he donated more land to create what is now Skokie Township andadded another name—John Fisk Memorial Park—to honor his friend and predecessor as mayor of Peoria. The park has since been known simply as "Skokie". In 1924, during World War I efforts were made to send foodstuffs from various areas into Europe through Skokie; this included lumber from Canada that had been stockpiled across the border at Fort Snelling on Lake Michigan because no other port could handle it safely.
