Skokie was incorporated on April 17, 1871. The village of Skokie was organized on December 2, 1864 from a portion of the then-unincorporated community of Westmont. A post office called "Skokie" was established in 1865 and remained in operation until it closed on September 25, 1984. The first settler in what is now Skokie Township was George Hildebrandt who arrived there with his family in 1847. Mr. Hildebrandt had to leave his land because he owned no water rights and so he leased it from the government for three years before getting title to it himself. He named his new settlement after him - Hildebrandtstown (now Highland Park). On November 7, 1870, voters Shallotte & Company donated 1/2 acre (0.16 km²) of their woodland lot to the village for use as a public square and also elected David Wessels as its first mayor On October 16th 1871 the Village Of Skokie created an official bank account with 4 $5 notes which were given out free to every householder that contributed $10 or more within one week . This event helped develop banking services in that area In 1881 Samuel Morse opened up his Morse Telephone line between Elmhurst and Chicago In 1919 Armour Ammunition Corporation built their plant here which still produces ammunition today

The village was incorporated in 1854 and quickly became an important agricultural center in the area. In 1907, Chicago annexed the townships of Skokie and Glenview to form the city of Chicago. However, Skokie continued to exist as a separate municipality until 1972 when it merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form the current Skokie Village community. The town was first settled by Indian Americans who were part of the Northwest Indian Expedition of 1795-1796. When Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance in 1792 which defined religious freedom for Native American tribes, many of these Indians decided to move into what is now Skokie Township because they felt safe there from British violence. By 1800, about 40% of all population growth within Cook County took place within ten miles (16 km) of Chicago; this growth led to an increased demand for land close to downtownChicago. In 1847, Samuel Skokie purchased over 6 acres (2 km2) near present-day Schoenfeld Road and Wellesley Avenue from John Burrows for $8 per acre ($143/km²). This purchase set off a long process by which Samuel developed his small village into a thriving community that would eventually be home to more than 2,000 residents by 1860.
