Shorewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Shorewood is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and is bordered by Cicero to the east, Downers Grove to the north, Revere and Northbrook to the west and Winnetka to the south. Shorewood was founded in 1836 as a result of land speculation by two brothers named John Shore and James Hennigan. The first settler in what would become Shorewood was Isaac Cramer who moved there from New York City in 1835. The town name derives from "shore wood" which means "a tree that grows on or near open water." In 1853, George Washington Carden donated two acres (0.8 km2) of land for a courthouse and town hall. The cornerstone for these buildings was laid on July 3, 1854 by Mayor William Davenport Jr.. In 1870-71, $10,000 worth of real estate gifts were made to improve roads and trails that led into Shorewood from nearby communities such as Cicero, Downers Grove, Northbrook and Revere. A post office was established at Shorewood in 1872; it remained in operation until 1959. In 1889-90 (the year before its incorporation), Shorewood built its first school building: a one-story frame structure with an addition designed by noted architect Levi Richardson II which served as their High School until 1963 when they replaced it with their current high school building which also serves as their Town Hall today. After years of debate about whether or not to annex neighboring communities such as Cicero Township (to form a new city) or merged with them (forming a new community), on March 15th 2009 both townships voted against annexation by joining together instead forming what would later be known as the Chicago Metropolitan Area
