The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to individuals and organizations in the Shorewood area. The Marines have donated many baskets over the years, including many that are still in use today. In 1941, the Marine Corps deployed a basket to shorewood Elementary School as part of their Christmas program. This was the first time that Marines had ever contributed anything to local charity. It is also likely that this basket was one of the few gifts sent out by Marines during World War II. Since then, individual Marines have continued to send baskets full of goodies to local schools and organizations. In 1995, for example, a basket was sent to Shorewood Middle School in commemoration of Marine veteran Darrell Smith who had served in Korea and then rejoined the military after returning home. Shorewood is a small town in northern Illinois, located on the edge of the rolling drumlins of the Sangamon County central plateau. The town was founded in 1852 by Congregationalists from Vermont and New England, after it was surveyed by Jeremiah Dixon. It grew quickly, thanks to its natural resources, and by 1870 had a population of 350. By 1900, Shorewood had reached 1,100 residents. In the early 19th century, Shorewood was one of the most important fur-trading towns in Illinois. Its merchants supplied traders at Fort Dearborn and other posts along the Great Lakes region with Native American furs. In 1812, when James Kempton became captain general of North America under First Lord Liverpool, he sent his brother-in-law John Fenton to explore Georgian Bay for shipping opportunities in what is now Ontario province. While ashore atshore at Lake Simcoe on September 10th,,1812 (the date known as "Fenton's Landing"), Fenton met two men who would later become famous: Captain John Smith and Nicholas Grebe. Grebe told Fenton that he had found buried treasure deep inside aQioutice Hill near Toronto; this led to the development of Canada's first inland port - Jarvis - and helped spur economic development around Toronto during the mid-19th century. Meanwhile back at shorewood... The first post office in Shorewood was established on December 5th,. 1853; it served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Burlington (then part of Massachusetts) and Chicago via Rock Island Railroad station located just east of town center. The first store opened in 1860; it was called The Exchange Furnace & Wharf Store and featured an array of local goods such as flour, butter, eggs and cheese among other items sold direct to consumers through door-to-door salesmen or wagonloads from nearby farmers’ markets

The town was founded on a small peninsula in the Mississippi River and quickly grew to become one of the most important cities in central Illinois. By 1850, Shorewood had expanded to include a population of over 10,000 people. In 1865, Shorewood was annexed by Chicago, becoming one of the city's first suburbs. In 1922, Shorewood was renamed after Admiral George Dewey and became an important naval port for Chicago. Today, Shorewood is a suburb of Chicago with over 20,000 residents.
