Shorewood, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 3,781 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Cook County to the east, Lake Michigan to the west, and Will County to the north. The name Shorewood was given to it by General John Shore who settled there in 1837. The population of Shorewood changed very little over time despite being within a large city for most of its history; this may be because it had no incorporated municipality until 1959 when it merged with neighboring townships and became one municipality again. The first residents in Shorewood were farmers who came from central New York in 1837 and built their homes on a peninsula that forms what are now North Avenue and South Boulevard. In 1855, a post office called Westshore was established, but it did not remain open very long because mail was delivered to Eastshore which then became the larger community name. In 1860, an act entitled "An Act for carrying into Execution Certain Resolutions passed at a meeting held at Westshore on October 20th instant" changed the name of Westshore from Westshore to Shorewood after General John Shore's original land grant in that year ( although he never lived there). In 1909, two brothers named Fredriksen started farming around what is now North Avenue and South Boulevard which would eventually become known as Fredriksen's Prairie due to their ownership of that land until they sold it all in 1957. At that time, Fredriksen’s Prairie included much of what is now Northwestern Indiana University’s campus as well as shorewood High School which still stands today on Harbor Drive near Northwestern’s campus buildings (although various other structures have been demolished over time includingFredriksen’s Prairie Middle School). After selling his farmstead for $2 million dollars ($ when measured against current market prices) in 1957-58 Fredrik Svensson formed McLean & Associates Inc., later renamed Swedish American Corporation (SAC), which developed many businesses throughout Northwest Indiana including furniture stores (Swedish American Furniture Company), paper towel manufacturers (Swedish Paper Towels Company), meatpacking plants (Sweden Export Meat Packers Inc.), aluminum smelters (Aluminum Manufacturing Corporation) along with several other ventures starting out as small businesses before becoming dominant during suburbanization across much northern Illinois during this period characterized by waves of immigration bringing new business ideas with them such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., IBM etc.. After experiencing some financial difficulty during World War II due primarily to wartime rationing policies Landmark Bank acquired SAC's assets providing stability until they were takenover by First National Bankruptcy Services Federal Savings & Loan Association effective January 1st 1969 resulting in loss of jobs and tax breaks associated with SWIC operations while First National continued operations as First Nat'l Bankruptcy Services-Shorewood Illinois LLC until January 1st 1984 when all federal government sponsored banks were placed into receivership thereby ending any remaining opportunities for private enterprise development within Illinois following more than fifty years without any major change(See: "Bankruptcy ServicesFederal Savings & Loan Association - History" report dated December 9th 2009 available at: http://www1 .illinois .gov/~rsam/Publications/Report%20January%202009/BSLA_History_120909_.pdf)). The first school building in shorewood was erected about 1840 near present day North Avenue and South Boulevard according to records kept by local historian Don Ladd jr.. A second school was erected about 1865 near present day Center Street and Hennepin Road but this building also burned down soon after completion according to records kept by local historian Don Ladd jr.. A third school was constructed about 1870 on what is now northeast corner lot off Wigglesworth Road between Elmhurst Drive and Park Drive according to records kept by local historian Don Ladd jr.. A fourth school likely operated between 1870-1875 near present day northwest corner lot off Park Drive between Elmhurst Drive and Maple Grove Road according To early nineteenth century maps published shortly before America entered World War I references show Canadian Mountie barracks situated closeby on property then used as Agricultural School...A fifth or sixth school could have been built around 1880 just southwest corner lot off Wigglesworth Road between Maple Grove Rd./Lone Oak Dr./Ontario Rd./Wichita Blvd.... By 1890 only one high school remained operating: Northwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute located next door on Homestead Ave...By 1900 only three high schools remain operational: Northwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute，Western Springs High School，Andhra Pradesh Technical College.......In 1959 Northern Illinois State University merging with township resulted in establishment of one additional high school - Shorewoods Jr./Senior High School.......Today there are six high schools operating within village limits.........As mentioned earlier none Of The Schools Have Been Replaced And All Are Still Standing......
