The Coast Guard has been providing service to the Shorewood community for over sixty years. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station was established inshore and began patrols on Lake Michigan. The Station grew and expanded, serving as a Point of Contact for law enforcement officers and boaters. In 1978, the Coast Guard Station relocated to its current location on the south side of town, becoming one of the first stations in Illinois to receive a marine patrol vessel. In 1992, the station upgraded its infrastructure with new equipment and opened its doors to civilians as well as members of the Coast Guard Reserve. Since then, it has continued to provide essential services to Shorewood residents. As part of their commitment to enhance public safety at all levels, the Coast Guard also operates a boatshed program that provides opportunities for local youth to learn about maritime safety and stewardship.
Shorewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,151 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Shorewood is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and is known for its Boardwalk amusement park and its many beaches. The first settler in Shorewood was Captain John Richardson, who arrived in 1795. He named his community after himself and his wifeMaryland shorewood, which he had seen while exploring the Great Lakes region. In 1825, Samuel Morse opened a dry goods store in what is now the Park District of Shorewood. Morse's store became one of the most important in shorewood until it closed its doors in 1906 due to social changes withinshorewood that made it difficult for him to continue operating a store there. At that time, almost all businesses wereowned by men because women did not have voting rights until after World War II when they were granted voting rights through state laws passed into law. In 1865, Isaac Matson established a blacksmith shop on Monroe Street in what is now part of Kirkland Village Elementary School Annexe (KVSE). This shop served as an early source of income for Shorewood residents and helped drive away competition from white merchants who began opening stores near KVSE during this time period. Matson continued to operate his shop until about 1919 when he sold it to Ephraim Gildersleeve who renamed it The Gildersleeve Shop Inc., later becoming Gildersleeve-Harrison Glass Company Incorporated (GHCO). GHCO manufactured windows and other glass products from 1918 until their closure in 1968 following litigation brought against them by rival manufacturers over pricing claims; howeverGHCO remained active as an importer and wholesaler until its dissolution into several independent companies shortly before their merger into American Horseshoe Corporation (AHC) following AHC's incorporation into Hibbard-Lincoln Shoes Corporation (HLSC) prior toDHHS' reestablishment of national insurance contributions/taxes within DHHS under Title XXI Of The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act Of 1974 (Pelley-Hawley Bill), commonly known as HR 462 or "the Pelley-Hawley Bill". Shorewood, Illinois was a small town located in La Porte County, Indiana. It began as a small community of about seventy residents in 1827. By 1881, Shorewood had grown to over 1,000 residents. The town was named for Edwin Westbrook, an early settler. In the 1840s and 1850s, Shorewood grew rapidly due to the booming trade with the fur market in Canada. The town's economy changed when railroads were constructed through La Porte County in the 1860s and 1870s. A new railroad station was built on the eastern edge of Shorewood in 1870 and it became one of the most important transportation hubs in shorewood's history. The original courthouse was built in 1868 and it served as the municipal court until 1902. In 1917, a new courthouse was built on State Street near where present-day Griggs Park is located. The courthouse is still used today and is considered one of the finest examples of Prairie Gothic architecture in Illinois. Shorewood also boasted one of the first indoor swimming pools in America In 1928, Shorewood won its first championship title at state championships when swimmer Alvin "Buddy" Beardsley won three gold medals and two silver medals during his career at what is now Griggs Park High School (now Shurmur). In 1932, Dickenson Aviation Products Corporation opened its corporate headquarters on Jabez Road just east of State Street; this would be home to many other notable companies such as Ford Motor Company before they moved away fromshoreline into larger locations across downtown Indianapolis by 2006 . In 1984, Griggs Park High School closed down after more than fifty years of providing education for students from Shorewood Comprehensive School District Number One . Today there are only scattered remnants of homes dating back to these early days remaining within walking distance of some central points around town including Main Street which has been renamed Harbor Drive , Jabez Road which has been renamed Belleview Avenue since then... throughout all these changes [in] our community we have never lost sight or respect for our roots or what made us unique - our friends and neighbors who have remained here through all these changes
