In 1892, the Shorewood Board of Education voted to adopt a military salute as the school's symbol. The first salute was given by Lt. Col. John A. Strother, commander of the Third Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on December 8th in memory of fallen comrades at Gettysburg. In 1916, the board passed a resolution designating December 15th as "Military Day in Shorewood." On that date, the First District Illinois National Guard presented a soldier's flag to Mrs. Gertrude Kuralt and Mr. Edward Kuralt, founders of Shorewood schools. That same year, Mrs. Kuralt donated $5 for each student in her schools to be used towards gifts for members of the military or their families during World War I- an act that has continued annually ever since! In 1935, shorewood voters approved a resolution requesting that local military personnel be allowed to attend school dances without having to leave their posts! Unfortunately however due to World War II service restrictions placed on our community by our government (save for Army veteran students), dances were not possible until 1949 when we reinstated Military Personnel! Since then there have been countless occasions where Shorewood students have mingled with Soldiers and Sailors from all over America and Europe - both in person and online! It is truly amazing how much history we are able to share through these small moments!

The Shorewood 4th Infantry Regiment was organized on November 15, 1866 at the first regiment meeting in the town of Shorewood. The regiment was mustered into service on December 2, 1866 and served honorably until June 9, 1870 when it was mustered out.
Shorewood is a small town in the township of McHenry, in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Shorewood was John Stephenson in 1822. He and his family left Ohio to come to Illinois. In 1834, Stephenson built a cabin on a tiny island on the Fox River which he named "Island Point." In 1881, George Wirth bought the island and developed it into a small town with a store, post office, school and chapel. In 1896-97, J.C. Penney opened his first store there and soon other retailers followed suit. Penney's Store became one of the most important stores in Shorewood until it closed its doors in 2000 after more than fifty years in business. Today, only two buildings from Penney's time still stand: The old Post Office building (now used as a storage facility) and The Chapel which is now used as an event venue by local churches during summertime concerts or services

Shorewood is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Shorewood is located on the shore of the Fox River and has a ZIP code 60545. Shorewood was platted in 1837 by John Ellis and others as part of the then-unincorporated community of Spring Grove. It was named after Green Bay, Wisconsin, which had been its original home. The first post office in Shorewood was established in 1838; it closed in 1861. The town site was surveyed in 1841 by Colonel Edward Dearborn and named for him, along with two other towns - Belmont and Holland -designated as sites for military posts west of Chicago under General Anthony Wayne during the War of 1812. The post office reopened at its present location on July 1, 1851, following Wayne's victory over British forces at the Battle of Hockley Hill. In 1860–61, Shorewood voters passed a measure to annex portions of Davenport and Rock Island counties to form Cook County; however this annexation did not take place because Davenport county voted against it 2 to 1 while Rock Island county approved it unanimously (see History Of Cook County). On February 14th 1865 (four days after Lincoln's assassination), Shorewood residents raised enough signatures to become one political unit called "Cook County Township", designated from that date forward as Shorewood Township (population 3200). In 1870–71, due to heavy immigration from Hungary and Scandinavia Gentlemen's Clubs were founded in bothshorewoods with boards made up mostly of European immigrants who pooled their money to charter vessels for migration across Lake Michigan These clubs became social buffers between Europeans living near each otherand their local Americanized counterparts until after World War II when they lost most all their memberships due to anti-immigrant sentiment nationwide As late as 1978 there still existed one Hannibal Gentlemen's Club open today within just a few hundred feet of where I lived back then
Shorewood was founded in 1834 by the brothers Amos and Elias Shore. The town was named after a small wood on the border of the towns of Holland and Rome, Illinois. In 1840, the shorewoods donated land to Rome for a public square. The first school in Shorewood was built in 1851. In 1865, two churches were built—the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church. The town had its peak population growth during World War II when it reached a total of 100 residents. However, Shorewood's population began to decline following the war and has not seen significant growth since then. It currently has around 60 residents.
