The United States Air Force has a long and rich history in Shorewood, Illinois. The city was named after General James P. Kearny, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as the military governor of California. In 1921, General George S. Patton was assigned to lead the Air Corps training wing at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. After World War II, Shorewood became home to several USAF commands including the 9th Bombardment Wing stationed at Grand Forks AFB from 1951 to 1957; and Tactical Air Command's 5th Tactical Missile Group from 1958 to 1961. Shorewood also played a significant role during the Cold War with its base providing airlift for NATO forces duringOperation Northwoods which aimed to embarrass America's enemies by provocatively staging Skirmishes in their airspace. More recently, the USAF has operated an F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron at Elmhurst AFB in Elmhurst Heights since 1997 and is currently Operational Training Unit 3 (OTU-3) for new fighter pilots undergoing basic training at Great Lakes Airport near Chicago which will be replaced by US Airways Center Parkland when that facility is completed next year. The United States Air Force has a rich history in Shorewood, Illinois. The USAF was founded on December 15, 1948 by the Republic of China Air Force as the United States Air Forces in Taiwan. On July 1, 1949, the USAF became an independent military service under the command of the National Security Agency. In 1949-1950, the Air Force moved from Taichung to Taipei. The first unit stationed in Shorewood was The 1st Fighter Wing which arrived on October 16th 1950. This wing was sent to Taiwan at a time when America's involvement in Korea was still being negotiated and there were many unknowns about what would happen once hostilities began. In 1951-1952, during the Korean War, the USAF activated two wings located in Illinois: The 111th Fighter Wing and The 122nd Fighter Wing both stationed at Peoria AFB. These units provided air support for ground forces during operations against North Korea and their Campaigns of Liberation (COLD). On September 10th 1952 President Harry Truman signed legislationocating 2 fighter bomber wings -the 308th Bombardment Wing based at Grand Forks AFB ND andthe 307th Bombardment Wing based at Wichita Falls NF-. These two wings were combined into one squadron -the 309th Bombardment Squadron -on October 3rd 1952 effective with hostilities starting between North Korea and South Korea that same day. On November 25th 1952 USS Pueblo sailed into Ulithi Atoll bringing home 28 American servicemen who had been imprisoned by Kim Il Sung as part of Operation Demeter II which aimed to secure oil supplies flowing to South Korea through Ulithi Atoll for use by General MacArthur's troops fighting against Kim Jong Il's regime
Shorewood is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shorewood was founded in 1854 and its name derives from Englishwoman Sarah Morse who donated the land for the town on which it stands. The first post office opened in 1858. In 1870, Shorewood lost its autonomy to Springfield and became an incorporated village with a mayor and a board of trustees. In 1978, Shorewood merged with neighbouring Glen Ellyn to form the larger city of Springfield. The community has experienced some growth since then, with annexations by other towns in McLean County as well as additions from neighboring counties; however, much of that recent growth has been centered around new housing developments such as Maple Ridge Park and Northwoods Park. One important aspect of Shorewood's history is its strong military presence which has contributed to its nickname "The Hill Country". A number of local businesses continue to operate despite changes in economic conditions or competition from adjacent municipalities; some notable examples include Sears Holdings Corporation's headquarters building and Gateway Mall (now known as Pinnacle) which remain open despite major renovation efforts over many years. Shorewood was once home to several large manufacturing companies including Armoury-Smith & Co., Singer Sewing Machines Company, JBL Audio/Video Products Inc., JBS Food Services Inc., Sunoco Pipeline Service Company and numerous others. However these factories have closed or moved elsewhere since 2000 when Illinois enacted legislation prohibiting job destruction through plant closures without prior public notice or an opportunity for workers to voluntarily leave their jobs according to certain criteria set forth by state employers' unions seeking protection under labor law rules designed not only protect employees but also smaller businesses who might be unable to afford such protections themselves should they experience workplace violence or other forms of discrimination at the hands of their bigger competitors). Many residents have now moved away from the area due to economically challenging times however there are still a few remaining retirees living among friends who grew up during those good old days before manufacturing boomed - especially along Midland Ave where most people know their names (like Abe Bechtel).
