The air force has a long history of deploying gifts to local communities, whether it be through military or civilian channels. In 1949, the USAAF donated two Lockheed P-38 Lightning jets to Shorewood Elementary School as part of an educational program. This was followed by a gift in 1957 when the USAF donated four F-86 Sabre fighter jets to Shorewood High School. In 1969, the USAF contributed five DC-3 planes to Shorewood Intermediate School as part of a larger donation program. The USAF also donated two Cessna 337s to Shorewood Junior High School in 1984. These donations were followed by a gift from the USAF in 1990 when it donated six McDonnell Douglas MD-2C aircraft to Shorewood Senior High School as part of a larger donation program. The latest gift from the USAF arrived in Shorewood on November 11th, 2016 when it gifted three E-4B Sky Warrior airborne command posts (AFCP) to Boca Raton Airport Local Air Service Squadron 2 (LASS 2). LASS 2 is an RAF squadron which provides air traffic control services for Boca Raton Airport and neighbouring towns and villages within McHenry County. These AFCP are intended for use by members of LASS 2 who need assistance during airport operations such as runway takeoffs and landings. Airport officials say that this gift is most appropriate given that LASS 2 has played an important role at Boca Raton Airport for many years and their support would be invaluable during future airport expansions or renovations projects.
