Naval deployments have a long and varied history in the United States. The USS Constitution was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea during the War of 1812, while USS Lexington was sent to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The USS Enterprise sailed to Japan in 1945 as part of Operation Downfall, and later served in the Far East. In Shiloh, Illinois, on November 12, 1941, USS Missouri (CV4) took on a squadron of Japanese bombers for what amounted to an air-to-air engagement. Air Vice Marshal Toshihide Suga led the attack and scored one kill against his adversary before being forced to abort the mission due to lack of fuel. This event is often cited as one of history's first naval skirmishes. In 1946, USS Enterprise sailed from Yokosuka Naval Base for her final deployment with CVF 68th Squadron under Lieutenant Commander John Lutzke commanding. Shiloh is a small town in southern Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Shiloh post office opened in 1856. The town was named after General David Shiloh, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Mexico City. The name "Shiloh" has also been used to refer to various other places in the area: a railway station called "Shiloh Junction" was located here before it became a freight terminal; and another post office called "Shilohl" was established in 1899. A Methodist church was built here in 1895 and dedicated by Rev. James Fenton Hilliard. The current building is a two-story structure with Gothic Revival style architecture.
