Shiloh, Illinois is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. It is located about 25 miles east of Chicago on I-70 and across from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The population was 3,383 as of the 2010 census. The name "Shiloh" is derived from a Shawnee word meaning "place where they hunt deer." The first settler in what is now Shiloh was James Laughlin, who arrived in 1812. He named his land after General David Brown's Creek Station near present day Ottawa, Illinois. Other early settlers included John Pritzker and Daniel J. Lynch. By 1825, there were fourteen families living in Shilo Kill Township; by 1840, there were over sixty settlers living there. In 1854, Congress passed an act granting lands to school districts within ten miles of any city or town in order to improve education for local children. On July 1, 1865, Shiloh School District No 7 was organized with land donated by Amos Alexander and other early Settlers including Solomon Stowe and Elijah Howe (Hewitt). With assistance from various sources such as the United States Army Signal Corps and Ulysses S Grant’s personal fund set up specifically for educational purposes during his presidency (1865-1869), more than 6000 students were educated at Shiloh School between 1865-1930 inclusive! During World War II many residents joined military service including men who served in the U.S., Canada and Europe; women also cooked meals for troops on submarines while performing other tasks essential to their units including loading munitions onto ships off shore; parents sent their children to school even when it rained outside because they knew that if they didn't have a job available at home then they would get one soon enough through enlistment or other means! A post office called "Shiloh" was established here on October 7th 1888 by Wm Hinshaw with mail delivered until 1903 when mail delivery switched to Chicagoland Railway Company facilities located just south of Center Street which remained operational until 1950
