Shiloh is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Shiloh comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where I will be." The town was platted in 1871 by Major John B. Shiloh and his wife Mandy. It was named after General Stephen Troup's commando unit that destroyed Fort Dearborn during the Battle of Griswold in 1812. Shiloh is located in southeastern Cook County at (41.142711, -87.717719). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 8,859 people, 3,527 households, and 2,681 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,582 people per square mile (590/km²). There were 4,044 housing units at an average density of 629 per square mile (240/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White Oakuki

Shiloh was a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The community is named after the Battle of Shiloh (April 6, 1862), which was fought between Union and Confederate forces. At the time of its incorporation in 1868, Shiloh had a population of only 185 people. By 1920, it had shrunk to just thirty-six residents. However, it still remains an important part of local history and culture today. Shiloh first came into existence as a village in 1868 when two steamboats called the "Argus" and the "Osprey" collided near the current site of the town. The two boats were both owned by Andrew Griggs, who ran a ferry service across the Kankakee River. In order to prevent any further accidents, Griggs donated land to build a village on which his boat engines could be used for loading and unloading cargo. The name "Shiloh" was chosen due to its resemblance to General Philip Sheridan's beloved horse Shinny. The first building built in Shiloh was a Methodist church located at what is now Ninth Street and State Street. It served as the village's primary meeting place until 1872 when there were enough worshipers in nearby Crystal City that they decided to build their own building. That same year also saw the birth of one of Shilohlans' most famous residents - James Wickersham - who became governor of Illinois after being elected during the American Civil War as an independent candidate from Chicago Heights (now West Side). Wickersham is considered one of Illinois' greatest governors because he helped improve education opportunities for black Americans and sponsored legislation that legalized gambling within Illinois borders. He also played an important role in ending Reconstruction following slavery's collapse throughout America. In 1870, Shiloha added another building - this time a school - which served students from kindergarten through grade twelve."Despite limited financial resources", according to historian John Muhlenkamp,"the school functioned effectively until it burned down in 1923". Despite this tragedy,"Muhlenkamp writes,"the school continued operating until 2002". In 1880, additional buildings were added: a storehouse and barn on Third Street; and an Methodist parsonage on South Second Street."These additions helped increase enrollment at School #1 from sixty-four students in 1888 to more than one hundred by 1912". The post office opened in 1865 along with Village Hall (later renamed Town Hall) on Fourth Street." despite some issues such as defective wiring ",the new post office remained open until 1957 ". During World War II", mail delivery services were intensified ; however , since 1944 all mail has been delivered electronically ."Although originally designed as largely agricultural pursuits ",shipping containers carrying goods from farmers’ markets into urban areas began arriving at Village Hall during the late 1800s ". Another early residentof Shilohanwas William Sweenywho founded what is now Peoria Brewing Company ." Although primarily involved with brewing beer ",Sweeny also organized various civic events including First Congregational Church services held at his home (); he also played an important role in developingShilan's engineering capabilities ." Today much of what makes up modern day Shilan trace back directly or indirectly to these early settlers . For example ," since 2001 , annual productionof shilts , made from cornmeal doughnut shapes developed at School #2 (),has becomean iconic tradition enjoyed by everyone living within 15 miles .. ..several generations later,, children learn howto make shilts at home .)
