The Coast Guard has been providing safety and security on the Illinois coast for over a century. The service was started as a response to the many shipwrecks that happened during the late 1800s. In 1924, the Coast Guard was created by Congress as a result of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. At that event, America’s first international exposition, President Coolidge decided to establish a federal agency to help protect U.S. coasts from piracy and other crime. The Shiloh Peninsula was first settled by the Illinoisans in 1811. The Coast Guard was established on December 8, 1912, when a group of about twenty men from Quincy, Illinois, founded the Coast Guard Auxiliary to help protect shipping on the Great Lakes. The Auxiliary's first mission was to search for sunken ships. In 1916, the Auxiliary became part of the United States Coast Guard and its name was changed to the Shiloh Coast Guard District. On July 1, 1948, the District became an independent agency within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Shiloh is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located about 20 miles north of Chicago on the Fox River. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The community was formed in 1854 when three families from nearby Cornville bought land and founded what would become Shiloh. One of the first businesses in town was a general store. The name "Shiloh" originated from the Shawnee word meaning "place where rivers converge." In 1868, Shiloh became one of twelve towns comprising the Rush Township subdivision of Cook County. In 1916, it merged with neighboring Limerick to form Shiloh-Limerick Township. That year, its population reached 10,000. An agricultural center sprang up around Shiloh during the early 1800s, and by 1860 there were more than 100 farmers hereabouts operating some 1,500 acres (40 hectares) of crops and hogs alone. By 1900 however, only 15 farms remained; most had been abandoned by then because of machine farming or lack of access to water resources that had become more important during World War I with increased industry settlement in northwest Cook County (the area now known as Lemont). During World War II much work took place near ShilOH for munitions production; including an 8-acre (3 ha) concentration camp operated by Bell Laboratories which employed up to 4,000 men between 1940 and 1945; along with other plants such as Phelps Dodge Chemical Works on Race Street which manufactured gasoline and chemicals until 1985 - these activities also created significant environmental impacts throughout eastern Cook County

Shiloh was the birthplace of General Joseph Hooker, who led Union forces in the Civil War. The town was renamed for General James Shiloh following his victory at that battle. Shiloh is located in southern Illinois and is bounded by La Salle County on the west, Knox County on the east, and White County on the north. The town has a population of approximately 25,000 residents. It is included within the Chicago metropolitan area. The town first appeared on maps as early as 1815. Shilohs original settlers were white men from Kentucky and Virginia who arrived in what is now Illinois as part of a Mormon migration to central America during the 1840s. By 1846, however, African Americans had started to arrive in large numbers in what is now Illinois; these newcomers were known as "Black Jacks." In 1847, Black Jacks gathered together to form a provisional government called "The United States African Republic" which lasted until December 10, 1850 when it was overthrown by Ulysses S. Grant's army under orders from President Fillmore. In 1859, Shiloh became an important center for cotton production after giant steamboats brought cotton from distant states such as Mississippi and Alabama to be processed here into fabrics and textiles. Cotton production continued until 1970 when it was replaced by petroleum-based products as world markets changed
Shiloh was a Confederate army headquarters located in Illinois. It played an important role during the American Civil War, and was ultimately sacked by Union troops.
