In 1864, the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant moved south from Chattanooga, Tennessee to capture Shiloh, Tennessee. The Union army laid siege to the Confederate stronghold for two months before finally relieving the garrison on October 15th. This event is commonly known as the Battle of Shiloh and is considered one of the most important Union victories of the Civil War. As a result of this victory, Confederate General Robert E. Lee was removed from command of his forces and surrendered unconditionally on October 19th. The battle at Shiloh was also an important victory for American democracy because it demonstrated that if United States military power could be used successfully against Rebel forces, then similar success could be achieved in other theaters of war. American troops had learned how to fight effectively during this time and were ready for further campaigns in the South.

Shiloh is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is made up of two parts: the predominately white and middle-class town of Shiloh proper and the African American community of Mount Zion. The racial makeup of Shiloh was 97% black as of 2000. The name "Shiloh" originally came from the Choctaw word "aliho", meaning 'a small stream.' In 1818, General James K. Polk sent an expedition to explore what are now Iowa and Missouri Territories after winning an election in which he pledged not to recognize any Indian nations but rather to promote peace by assimilating them into American society. After his victory over Mexico at the Battle of Buena Vista Hill on November 7, 1824, Polk's forces discovered what would become known as Lower Arkansas River Valley and its lying between Evansville (now Johnson City) on the east side and Prairie du Chien on the west side. He named this area Shiloh because it resembled Aliho Creek - a small creek that flowed near his father's estate in Tennessee). When residents in neighboring towns began to move away during the early 20th century for various reasons – including prohibition laws – many veterans from World War I settled in Shilopah; some even built homes there until they could find new homes elsewhere. One such veteran was Fenton Dixon who purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) southeast of Mount Zion Cemetery for $5 per acre ($100/hectare at current values). Dixon used his land as grazing ground for cows and horses before becoming one of Illinois' first farmers. In 1925 he donated 160 acres (72 hectares) northwest of Mount Zion Cemetery - located where present-day Mount Zion Baptist Church stands - to erect a cemetery there with burial privileges for soldiers killed in action or buried on or around his property during World War I; later that year he also erected a large stone cross commemorating those who lost their lives while serving our country overseas. A plaque remembering Dixon's donation can be found at nearby Carbondale Regional Airport today ( ). Dixon also helped found Carbondale Christian School in 1923 which remains open today as one of Carbondale's most popular educational institutions.. He also founded Stonington Memorial Hospital which became home to shrapnel injuries sustained during World War II when Japanese bombers bombed Pearl Harbor.. In 1956 Dixon donated 5% off all sales at All Souls Methodist Episcopal Church (later Moody Bible Institute) across from Carbondale Regional Airport to help support local charities within Kane County.; Stonington Memorial Hospital continued providing free care services until it closed its doors in 1993 due to budget cuts.. Dixon died March 4, 1995 from congestive heart failure following a long illness; however, he is still remembered fondly by many people locally who attend Moody Bible Institute chapel services every Sunday morning since he left such an impact upon this congregation."

In 1815, Captain John Stroud and his party discovered gold near present day Shiloh and decided to settle there because it offered good prospects for agriculture and trade with other parts of America In 1832, General William Mifflin sent American soldiers led by Colonel James Fenton to take possession of what is now Peoria County in order to open up Illinoisland for white settlement . The government decided not to let Europeans control all the land so Fenton instead founded Springfield which became the capital of Illinois On November 3rd,1833, Shiloh was officially incorporated as a village under law #965 The first blacksmith shop in what is now Shiloh opened its doors on December 15th 1861 A post office called "Shiloh" was established in 1865 and closed in 1901 Reverend Elijah Hicks preached at various churches around town before moving permanently to Corinthia (now Carbondale) in 1867 where he started an unsuccessful school ministry that years later merged with his native church heretofore known as First Baptist Church . Reverend Hicks died from pneumonia on October 25th 1889 and was buried at Hartsville Cemetery . In 1860s many people living around Shilo's main square built a large wooden bridge over the Arkansas River just south of town center which still stands today as a popular spot for picnics and weekend visits by locals and tourists alike
