The National Guard in Schaumburg, Illinois was activated on September 8, 1942. The first unit to arrive was the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The 1st Battalion served until December 5, 1942 when they were redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. In 1945, the battalion was re-designated as Company A and served until May 1946 when they were disarmed and disbanded. In 1957, Company A was reactivated again in Schaumburg and served until 1959 when they transferred to Decatur County IL and were redesignated as Company C. In 1960 they transferred to Joliet IL and remained there until their disbandment on November 18th 1961.

Schaumburg is located on the south side of Chicago and is bordered by Lake Michigan to the north and east, Will County to the west and south, and DuPage County to the southeast. Schaumburg is known for its agricultural industry, which includes maize production and other crops. The first European settlers in Schaumburg arrived from Holland in 1834. They named their new community "Schaumburg", after one of their homeland's main rivers, Waalburg (the Dutch name for "Waldemar"). In 1835–1836, a small group of Irish immigrants settled in Schaumburg; they were soon followed by Germans from Bavaria. The total number of settlers in Schaumburgh during this time period was six or seven families. In 1846–1847, three brothers – John Purdy (1821-1902), John Daley (1825-1915) and Michael Nevin (1828-1900) – founded a flour mill in what is now part of Schaumburgh Township. By 1850, there were ten mills operating in Cook County; all but two were owned by white men. In 1865–1966 various land purchases led to the construction of several large farms that dot today's suburban landscape: Arlington Farms near Northwest Side Highway 155 / Interstate 90 interchange; Churchill Downs between 151st Street NW and Westchester Road; Eastern Hills Farm just east of Noose Hollow Road off I-90 Exit 95A/Lincolnshire Road; Schumacher Farms just southwest of Route 59 / Interstate 94 exit 10B on Stanley Avenue; Social Circle Farms about one mile northeast of North Avenue on State Fairgrounds property - these properties are now part as part of Metro Park District . The town's early growth may have been due to its location along navigable channels connecting Chicago with points northward on Lake Michigan – an important market for farmers since early settlement: "Water transportation became an important factor early on because it allowed goods brought down by steamboats or sailing vessels to be landed here instead of being carried overland." A gristmill built in 1851 began running according as late as 1907 providing power for village lights until 1924 when electric service was introduced. Many factories developed around this time such as Jardine Bros., Champion Furniture Co., Gretsch Musical Instrument Co., Singer Sewing Machine Works & Warehouse Co., Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company etc.. After prohibition ended following World War I some residents moved away while others bought out remaining companies making Schlumberger another manufacturer located nearby with its own plant purchased from Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company
