Schaumburg, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 153 at the 2010 census. Schaumburg is located in the eastern part of Chicago and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east and south, Rockford to the northwest, and Peoria to the west. The area that now Schaumburg was first settled by Germans in 1829. The original name for Schaumburg was "Waldheim". In 1847, a group of southern German immigrants named themselves "Schaumburgians" after their home village of Schaumburg in Germany. By 1850, most of the settlers had moved away from Waldheim and established a new community called Schaumburgh on what are now North Shore Drive and West Side Road. The name change came about because when they first set up their homes there were few trees so they erected large poles as markers to show where they lived. When railroad developers arrived in early nineteenth century they began looking for land to build tracks through Cook County and found some good fishing grounds around Schaumberg but no place for them to build stations. They offered money (and sometimes goods) to anyone who would let them lay track through his or her territory so someone decided it might be worth trying to get rid of those pesky Germans so they changed their name back to Waldheim which stuck until 1919 when it was changed again - this time to Schaumburgh after another family member who had emigrated from Germany some years earlier
