The Military Gift History Museum in Sauk, Illinois is dedicated to the history of military gift giving in Sauk County. The museum has a collection of over 2,500 items that include clothing, weapons, tools, and memorabilia from local military veterans and their families. The museum was founded in 1984 by members of the Sauk County Board of Education. It was initially housed at the old high school building until a new facility was constructed on town square in 1995. The current building was designed by architect Don Gorman and construction began in November 1997. It cost $11 million to build and it opened to the public on October 3, 2001. In honor of World War II veteran George Hines Sr., who served as an airman with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and later became a member of the Sauk County Historical Society, the museum named its first exhibit after Hines. The exhibit Permanent Collection: Memorabilia from George Hines Jr. tells the story of how Hines acquired his collection of war memorabilia and artifacts including aircraft models and uniforms. Today, there are more than 350 items on display at the Museum which includes everything from handguns to medals dating back to World War I. There is also a section devoted to soldier spouse gifts which includes mementos such as photos, pet food dishes, Nancy Sinatra-themed coffee cups and more! Admission is free for all visitors!

Sauk is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Sauk is located on the Fox River about 15 miles (24 km) east of Chicago. Sauk is part of the Kane County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Sauk Indian Reservation was established in 1851 and named for Samuel Sault, an Indian trader who had been killed by white settlers near present-day Saukville. The reservation encompassed most of what is now Kane County as well as some portions of Winnebago and Crawford counties in Wisconsin. The first post office was founded in 1854 and named for John Farragher, a landowner in nearby Rockford. In 1865, the Sauk Indian Agency was established to administer the reservation's lands between Rockford and Joliet; it still exists today as the Rockford Aboriginal Community Services Agency. In 1871, a group of anglers led by Captains George Aiken and David Dunham explored what would become Cook County while fishing from their vessels on the Fox River; they named their new county after them, Sauk County being one of several localities mentioned in their reports. In 1872, settlers began arrive from Illinois to build log cabins around what would later become village sites along the Fox River; these were known as "Sault villages." By 1874, there were over 100 Sault villages scattered throughout Kane County. In 1870s–1880s resulted significant population growth due to cheap land grants given out by US president Grover Cleveland following his visit to this area; many Native Americans lost access to key cultural activities such as hunting and gathering because these resources became available through white settlement instead (Erickson & Ennis). This change also impacted social dynamics within Native American communities which saw increased competition for finite resources among various groups living together before contact with Europeans had interrupted traditional patterns of intergenerational oral storytelling transmission (Goudreau). As result of this rapid land distribution and economic development within Native American communities during this time period – oftenentimes at odds with each other – many native leader were forced into exile or retirement (Fowler). With its proximity to Chicago – once ground zero forindustrialization – Sauk quickly became known as one of Illinois' early manufacturing towns thanks to its role in heavy industry during late 19th century America's heyday (.pdf). Manufacturing contributions totaled more than $1 million per year during that decade alone according to government records (.pdf), amounting almost two-thirds of all agricultural production statewide (.pdf), much higher than any other community outside Chicago ().
