Saul was a town in Sauk County, Illinois, United States. The community was founded in 1847 and named for General David Dixon. Saul is located on the Sauk River. In 1848, the first post office in Sauk County was established at Saul. In 1872, Saul became the county seat of Sauk County. In 1907, Saul incorporated as a city with a population of 100 people. On July 1, 2009, Saul ceased to be an incorporated city and became a unincorporated community once again.
On July 20, 1847, Sauk County was organized as a part of the Illinois Territory. The first courthouse in Sauk County was built on the site of the present-day Sauk Elementary School. A post office was established at Sauk on November 2, 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1865. The first school trustees were John J. Neeley and Ebenezer King. The first teacher in Sauk County was Mrs. Mary Bicknell. Saucier Township initially consisted of only a few hundred acres (0 hectare). By 1860 it had grown to include over 6,000 acres (2 hectares), making it one of the largest townships in the territory. In 1863, when Sauk Township became a part of Kane County, farms that had been located within its boundaries were annexed into Kane County as well. The population of Sauk increased rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s because farmers from nearby Cook County started moving to South Dakota to engage in agriculture or cattle drives for shipment back east to market. As new settlers arrived they began buying land around Nauvoo and starting new businesses such as flour mills and tanneries; these operations attracted other farmers who decided to move to Nauvoo also. Consequently, by 1857 there were more people living near Nauvoo than anywhere else in Illinois – except for Chicago! When Joseph Smith married Emma Hale he moved from his home near Carthage Jail into what is now Quincy Ward on April 6th1844 which made him president of all Saints under God including those residing northward along Lake Michigan shoreline!
