Round Lake is a small town in La Salle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. The Village of Round Lake is the only incorporated community in La Salle County and it is located on the east side of Round Lake. Round Lake was laid out by George Rogers Clark in 1824 as part of his survey of the area around Chicago. The first settlers were Temperance Baptists who arrived in 1828 and built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. They soon moved to a more permanent location, clearing land for a community that would eventually include 53 homes, five stores and six churches. In 1834, President James K. Polk ordered Corps of Engineers General Samuel W. Richardson to prepare an outline for what would become Round Lake which included demolishing all but four Indian villages along the way so that white settlement could begin without fear of attack from them or their respective tribesmen. Richardson's plan called for creating artificial waterways that would allow goods and people to flow freely between Chicago and Warsaw while also providing farmland suitable for farming and cattle ranching nearRound Lake proper. The new village was named after General Richardson himself - Round Lake Township (now La Salle County). During World War II, roundabout roads were constructed through Round Lake so military vehicles could move unimpeded between Warsaw Point on the south side and Clearwater Harbor on the north side without having to enter or exit through Indian villages situated along the way.
