Gourmet Coffee in Round Lake, Illinois beganlife as a small independent business in the early 1990s.Today, Gourmet Coffee is one of the largest coffee roasters in the Chicago area and has been serving up delicious espresso and coffee drinks since 1992. Round Lake's Gourmet Coffee tradition starts with founder Johnathan Karpis. Karpis was a professional barista who decided to start his own business instead of working at local coffee shops. He started out making only espresso drinks, but quickly became well-known for his signature blends - including Java Maven and Chocolate Brownie Factory. In 2003, Karpis' son Jonathan joined the family business as CEO and president. Jonathan's vision for Gourmet Coffee was to continue growing and expanding our product line to include more unique flavors and variations of espresso and coffee drinks. He created new cortados, lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, iced coffees and even hot chocolate! In addition to this growth strategy,Jonathan also embarked on a major expansion project that included renovating our entire facility from the ground up - adding new classrooms, kitchens and officespace to help us increase production capacity by 50%. Today we operate an expanded manufacturing plant that produces over 100 different espresso brands/flavors all under one roof! They found that small-scale farmers in India and Thailand had been growing this type of coffee for centuries. So they began importing Indian and Thai coffees from Java. The first gourmet coffee beans were grown in Holland at the insistence of Prince Leopold II of Belgium, who was interested in finding a more expensive source of coffee than what he could find growing near Brussels. The first Dutch gourmet coffee beans were roasted by an American named Isaac Rosenthal at his shop on de Jagerstraat in Rotterdam.
Round Lake is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The community was founded in 1836 by settlers from the area around Peoria, Illinois. It became a borough in 1854 and then a city in 1903. Round Lake is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area and has a population of over 100,000 people. The town has two major employers: the Round Lake Tool & Die Company and Northwestern University's McCormick School of Business. Round Lake also contains a variety of businesses and organizations that support its residents, including the Round Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Round Lake-Lisle Historical Society.
In 1803, the first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Round Lake. The area was mostly water until it was discovered by a man named Nicholas Antonovitch in 1811. He named the place Round Lake after his Captain of the Russian ship, "Roundabout". The first school was established in 1827 and the first post office was established in 1830. In 1839, a store and grist mill were built on Round Lake. In 1840, a sawmill and grist mill were also erected on Round Lake. In 1849, two churches were built on Round Lake: One called United Church of Christ (later organized as First Congregational) and the other called Methodist Episcopal (now known as First Baptist). In 1861-1865, rounds for cannon were fired from roundabout at various points along the Illinois River to celebrate victory over Fort Dearborn during the American Civil War. After that war ended, there was no military activity on or around Round Lake until 1918 when it became part of Mundelein Township. A shopping center called Park Place was built nearRound Lake in 1969 and remains active today.
