Round Lake Beach started as a small fishing village on the western edge of the present-day town. In 1885, Abram J. Grant bought 6 acres (2 ha) of land and founded Round Lake Beach as a summer resort for people who could not visit Chicago because of its heat waves. By 1895, Overland Railroad employees had built a station there and began to bring passengers and cargo to and from Chicago's North Side. In 1896, Congress designated Round Lake Beach as an official U.S. Naval Station in honor of Rear Admiral John Fiske Washington II (1851-1925). The first navy ship to dock at Round Lake Beach was USS "Plymouth" on 3 October 1898 during the Spanish–American War; she served as flagship of Squadron 5 from 1898-1902 under Rear Admiral David Denny (1859-1937). The French built a small fort here in 1634. Fort Michilimackinac was established by the French along the west bank of round lake in 1719. In 1814, as part of War of 1812, General James K. Polk sent an army across round lake from Wisconsin to invade Illinois. On July 4th, 1814, General John J. Pershing's army crossed over into Illinois near Round Lake Beach and destroyed Fort Michilimackinac and all other forts on that side of the lake except for Rock Island which was surrendered by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter on September 15th.
