Polk and his family, who were stationed at Fort Dearborn in Chicago. After the end of the American Civil War, General John J. Pershing moved his army to Romeoville in 1865 to take possession of the fortifications that had been used by Union forces. In 1886, General George Armstrong Custer was born in Romeoville. He served as a general during World War I and as Commanding Officer of Fifth Army during the battle of Gettysburg. In 1919, he became commander-in-chief of United States Forces Europe and oversaw troop movements throughout Central Europe until his death in 1923. His widow, Bellew Custer, took over command of USFE after her husband's death. Bellew Custer is generally considered to be one of the most important women generals in Ulysses S. Grant's career because she played a significant role in leading American troops into battle and developing strategies for European operations during World War II. She also served as honorary colonel (later brigadier general) for both First Infantry Regiment (now part of The Second Infantry Division) and Seventh Cavalry Regiment before her retirement from active duty in 1945. Today, Bellew Custer is considered an expert on battlefield strategy and has been invited to lecture at many universities across America about her experiences during World War II。 Romeoville also played a significant role in other aspectsof military culture throughout Illinois during the 19th century; it was home to several infantry regiments that fought alongside Union forces during the Civil War as well as artillery batteries that played an important role at numerous battles including Battle Creek Roadnulls against Confederate forces on July 3rd 1861 (). Romeoville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,232 at the 2010 census. Romeoville is part of the Peoria–Rockford–Champaign Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1853 by John Rome and his brother Nicholas Rome. John had been appointed postmaster of Romeoville after moving from what is now Spencer Township to start a new post office there with his brother. The first Post Office building was built on the square in 1853 and it served as the town's library until 1923 when the city of Peoria took over that function. In 1865, George Washington Carver moved to Romeoville from Normal, Illinois and started a farm near present-day Interstate 80 which became one of America's largest corn farmers. He also developed an unsuccessful business venture enterprises in railroad construction and other ventures that failed. In 1908, Roman Catholic Bishop James Loughran erected a church in memory of Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) member Revs Ignatius J Connellan and John Fenton inside the old Academy Building property which later became known as Holy Name Parish Center for Youth Ranching & Recreation annex #1 on Main Street across from Stritch Schoolhouse on North Second Street. In 1912, Pope Pius XI visit Ireland where he delivered remarks before laying down the Catholic Church laws at Our Lady's Chapel near Limerick Castle (). On October 15th 1925 President Calvin Coolidge dedicated First National Bankrolled Stores #2 on East Main Street just outside current day City limits becoming one of only two banks licensed by US Government within Illinois (). With its establishment come new opportunities for economic development including imposition of Prohibition during Prohibition era (). Romeoville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Romeoville was platted in 1871 and named for Italian general Julius Caesar's birthplace of Romeovilio on the banks of the Sangamon River. Romanoville was first settled by Germans who called themselves "Kreutzberger." A post office was established in 1872, and the town became a village in 1903. The village name was changed to Romeoville in 1907. In 1940, when World War II began, many people from Romeoville enlisted in the military and were drafted into the army or naval corps. Afterward, many of them returned home to live and work their farms until they could re-enter civilian life again. The most famous resident of Romeoville during its years as a small community was John Lennon who came to live there after leaving Liverpool in 1961. He played bass guitar with The Beatles on two occasions here: at an outdoor concert at Goodrich Park on July 20th., 1962 (the last time before his death) and another outdoor performance on October 14th., 1966 just before he left for England to recorded his album " Revolver ." The only other resident during those early years other than Lennon himself would be local doctor Geraldine Ferraro who also visited occasionally while living out of her car outside town limits; she had earlier moved from nearby Lombardville which had been annexed into Romeoville following a popular referendum held in 1902.). When it grew too large for their individual homes or when new housing developments started popping up all around Springfield Township (which includes much larger cities such as Chicago), some residents chose to move away from Romansvile altogether and take advantage of opportunity that Springfield Township had to offer such as better schools and more jobs available closer by – this migration led eventually to what is now known as Romeovierville within Springfield Township despite it never having taken place officially until after John Lennon's departure from Romansville (itself something that has been disputed by some historians). One notable exception though would be Mrs. Helen Faye Christensen who decided against moving away from her childhood home near Dunkirk Lake – she still lives there today – deciding instead to make use of its ample acreage for growing crops including potatoes which are now one of the mainstay industries powering Romaovierville’s economy today (). Today, much like then, Romanovilles Main Street features antique shops/merchants along with several restaurants/cafés along with several churches/Methodists being built over time as businesses provide needed support services not only to residents but also surrounding communities through partnerships such as job training opportunities or low income housing assistance programs (). Outstanding examples include Stonington United Methodist Church where restoration has recently commenced following damage done by fire back in 2007; Romir Villaanen Evangelical Lutheran Church which opened its doors completely refurbished after being abandoned for many years prior; plus numerous others that have since reopened including Riddle Schoolhouse Chapel & Playground which housed an early form place for organized play for children before becoming one of Romaovierville’s top tourist attractions.; finally two recent additions - Pope John XXIII Catholic church located adjacent Interstate 90 just east off Main Street next door to Hennepin County State Fairgrounds & Little Italy American Legion Post #1 - both providing worship options unavailable anywhere else inside or outside township limits (& giving increased competition amongst neighboring settlements) - continue this trend making Romanovoilles vibrant centerpoint amidst current day economic development within Springfield Township itself ().
