Romeoville is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Romanowsky family had been living in Romeoville since 1847. The first settler in Romeoville was Nicholas Romanowsky and his wife Catherine (née Kopp). They built a cabin on the east side of Main Street about 1851-52. Romanovoilles were named after Nicholas and Catherine's two children: Julius Caesar Romanovsky (1854-1928) who became an advertising executive with PepsiCo., and Evalyn "Eve" Romanovsky (1857-1934), who married Harry Weisz, son of one of America's leading theater owners. Eve played hostess to many prominent guests including President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his secret visit to Romeoville in 1941. In 1908 the town post office was moved from Romeoville to a new location on Orleans Road because it was being overcrowded in the old location on Main Street which had been used by several churches and businesses at once. In 1916, local residents voted not to annex into nearby Park Ridge because they felt that would have resulted in less access to education, health care, jobs, grocery stores, and other basic amenities for their community; rather than annexed into Park Ridge they opted instead to create their own municipality under the name of "Romeoville Township". They did this by referendum on December 12th of that year while residents of neighboring Park Ridge watched television news reports about it from their homes due to World War I restrictions on what could be shown live on American television at that time. On January 10th 1923 Park Ridge annexation papers were filed with the state government but were withdrawn when it was discovered that Romeoville Township had already established itself as an independent municipal unit with its own police department and fire department - something which Park Ridge officials claim never happened!
