The Coast Guard in Romeoville, Illinois was first organized on December 15, 1892. The original members of the Coast Guard were men who had enlisted in the service during World War I. The Coast Guard Station located in Romeoville was established on May 1, 1916. At that time it was the only station on the central Illinois coast. In 1945, a new station was built at Wilmington Harbor and named after Rear Admiral Arthur W. Radcliffe because he had been instrumental in leading the effort to build and activate the station. In 1978, another new station was built at Oak Park and given name “Hemlock” in honor of Commodore Hemlock Ladd who served as Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1951 to 1957. Today, there are three Coast Guards stations located throughout Romeoville: Wilmington Harbor (1945), Hemlock (1978), and Oak Park (1945). Each station provides law enforcement assistance to various areas along the central Illinois coast. In addition to providing law enforcement services, each station also offers educational opportunities for local citizens including a maritime academy which teaches safety techniques for boaters and fishermen; a navigation school which teaches about coastal navigation; and a shop where locals can purchase supplies necessary for their coastal patrols such as lifejackets, flares, moorings chains and more. The Coast Guard has played an important role in keeping our local communities safe since 1892 when they were founded here in Romeoville! Romeoville is located at (41.560911, -87.746362). It is bordered to the north by Rome Township and to the east by Carbondale Township. The village of Romeoville lies within Carbondale Township, but it is considered an enclave of Romeoville itself because of its small size and lack of services available within Carbondale Township. Romeoville was originally named after Nicholas Romeodoulou, a French-born American citizen who had settled in Illinois in 1824. He changed his name to Romanshield after purchasing land in that area from an Native American chief. The village was platted on December 5, 1836, and incorporated as a town on February 14, 1840. The first post office for Romevilles opened on April 10, 1840; it continued operation until July 3rd 1850 when it was moved to Carbondale due to low mail volumes from the small town's limited resources. In 1860, the Post Office became part of the Chicago Department of State under Superintendent John Pemberton; however, it remained operational until 1865 when it finally closed following a fire that destroyed much of downtown Chicago during night hours.
